I wonder what a similar poll of the general public might return?

I'd expect a bit more of a 50-50 split than on here!

I'd say it would be about 75-25 in favour of heat, I personally don't know anyone who enjoys cold in winter. I didn't even realise anyone liked cold until I joined this forum!

I love hot and thundery weather in the summer, but i also love cold snowy weather in the winter.

But i suppose i would probally pick summer over winter, i like warm humid but not massivly so evenings and Hot dry sunny weather with occasional big storms.

We dont really get much of either tbh

Oh I don't know - I'd say it's been 70% of people I've spoken to do not enjoy this kind of hot weather (luckily me & the missus both love it!). So I'm not entirely sure which way such a poll would go.

An easier one would be 'do you prefer winter or summer?' where I suspect there would be a huge majority go for summer. Mostly since average summer weather (18-22c some rain, some sun, lots of daylight) is vastly better than average winter weather (3-6c some rain, tiny bit of snow, very little sun, very little daylight).

Also, despite the UK having this reputation for being a bit rainy so many public and private big events take place in the Summer. The vagaries of the weather just adding to the fun so it would seem.

Cold. Cold. Cold. Cold. Cold. Cold. Cold. Ad infinitum.

Why would anyone prefer to be hot and sweaty with a face looking like a boiled beetroot?

Also, I'm with Northants Snow re skin conditions......the current heat and humidity is making my skin condition much more sore and painful than it usually is.

I am even more miserable than usual at the moment, because of the weather and I look forward to this year's "First Signs of Autumn" thread.

If hot is so good, why do so many birds fly north in the spring to raise their chicks in cool climes?

Anyway, too hot for me, even this far north. Especially in an office with broken aircon & windows you can't open. Who can work when their brain is melting out of their ears.... or sleep, when their ever inconsiderate neighbours feel the need to party all night with windows wide open.

As for greenfly - they are horribly adundant this year - every plant in the garden is covered in sticky gunk and greenfly casts.

Birds migrate north to breed for the food supply — hardly any insects around in the dry season, whereas northern climes have the mild weather and the water to keep a healthy insect population going. Enough to feed a family of hungry chicks.

What gets me about elfin safety is that there's a rule if working conditions are too cold, but none for when it's too hot. What you should do is insist on some fans being bought and have one on your desk, not perfect but helps.

May I be the first of the small minority to plump for Winter, then? :D

Im probably very much in the minority with regards to summer as I prefer it to be cool or average. Im one of those people who is constantly hot. I can stand outside in t-shirt in winter and not even feel it yet as soon as the mercury hits above 20C I start to struggle. I was bed-ridden in August 2003 with heat exhaustion after being outside for 8 hours in temperatures of just 30C. I also work night shifts and find hot days unbearable as it stops me from being able to sleep during the day as you cant have the window open because the noise tends to interrupt your sleep.

With regards to winter, I like potent cold spells and snowfall but would quite happily put up with a mild winter if at some point we got both of these (2003/04 was such a winter here). I, like Bottesford detest those days where its grey and the temperature doesnt move much and think its pretty pointless and just makes the bills go up! That spell from Boxing Day 2008 drove me bonkers.

So my vote would probably be for any sort of winter as long as it has snow and potent cold at some point and an average or cool summer. Unfortunately with our current climate Im usually disappointed on all counts!

COLD COLD COLD COLD COLD No question about it!!! always prefer winter, even those 5C cloudy grey days i much prefer to summer. Its been said already that its easier to warm up in winter than to cool down in summer and i agree, I much prefer having extra blankets in bed in winter than been all sweaty and not able to sleep in summer.I much prefer walking on frozen or snowy ground than walking in sticky weather with High humidity and high temps!

And best of all in winter you get SNOW SNOW SNOW!!! :):):):):)

definitely prefer cold in winter, way easier to warm up by having 2 jumpers on or whatever, putting a heater on etc or moving about/excercising

not possible to cool down when hot, especially in the evenings, hope it gets fresher soon

Certainly it's easier to warm up in winter (compared to cooling in summer) if you sit in a heated room - but than you suffer dry throat & drowsiness instead (well I do anyway!). Even still - when you come in all cold, you've still got to wait for the heater to do its work before it's warm (1-2 hours in my house on coldest days). Same goes in summer - come in all hot, take off your clothes then sit still for 10 mins and you're ok again.

I prefer not to have to 'hide' from the weather in order to cope with it. In summer (mostly) you can wear the same things in & out and often temps inside & out are very similar. It's almost like indoors & outdoors are as one. In winter it's all about sealing the outside world out of your protective shield (be that a big coat, or a dry heated house) and that's the crux of why I'm a summer fan - I like the sights, smells & feel of outdoors.

No surprises from me as I declare COLD at all times of year and the colder the better.

To save a lengthy explanatory post think of me as the polar opposite of Bottesford.

I prefer to think of being an 'equitorial opposite'!

Each to their own anyway and just cause I think you're crazy doesn't make you or anyone else wrong or indeed right either!

I agree with you there Bottesford. I'd much rather be oustide enjoying the weather than be stuck inside cucooned against it. In winter i can go weeks on end where i dont set foot outside in the garden due to the combination of it being freezing cold, muddy and the garden lacking any interest. Whereas in summer, even if it may be too hot to do strenuous excercise or play sports outside, the weather still entices you outside to enjoy all the colour and scents on offer. Similiarily in our city centres i love seeing everyone sitting outside eating and socialising as it brings such a feel good factor to the place as opposed to winter where everyones sole purpose seems to be just to do the necessary shopping and go home. I always find our city centres look far less attractive in the winter with everything being wet, the low sunshine making everwhere look dark and everyone looking glum and depressed.

Having said that, given i play a lot of sport i'm not a huge fan of the heat but it would still rank above winter cold for the sole reason that you can do very little outside in winter without freezing to death like waiting for a bus or cycling. Enjoying the outdoors in winter is pretty limited anyway. The normal working week means that you dont see the daylight except at weekends due to the short days and when you do venture out on a walk in the countryside you are forever dodging the puddles or coming back caked in mud, which i doubt anyone would find very pleasant.

I'd like a more continental climate, colder in winter, warmer in summer.

That's one reason I intend to emigrate to Latvia... :D

Me too. That's why I don't like summer. Nowt worse than being stuck indoors all day when it's bright and sunny outside :D In winter I can go out and enjoy it.

I'd prefer a climate where we had a good 3-4 months of winter, and then a short Spring and Autumn with a long hot and dry summer with a thunderstorm to top it off every 8-10 days. Similar to Moscow I suppose although Moscow is about as warm as London in Summer but does not have the same range of temps in summer, it never seems to get too hot or too cool which would be the only downside.

However what I do like about the British weather is that it is so diverse, we can get 33C one day and then a few days later we can have 20C, it is certainly very interesting and is what makes the MO discussions so interesting :o :o

Well only for 2/7 days of the week and even at weekends its dark before teatime so theres a very small window of daylight when you can actually go outside. Thats why i find winters so grim and depressing. In the summer if you do hate the heat just wait till the evening for a good 4 hours of more pleasant weather.

I also love in summer how the sun takes so long to set, from about 9pm they sky looks really nice and it only starts getting really dark at about 10pm.. gorgeous. In winter though it just seems to get dark so quickly..

I like the early dark evenings in winter for some reason, don't know why, but I prefer the dark evenings to light ones. However, I don't like winter mornings too much, still being dark at 8am is quite depressing.
