On about 210mm now, so the monthly record looks safe, but an awful lot for a Summer month.

Escaped today, bar some downpours this morning.

[/quoDreadful summer here so far, just like the past 2!!!! Maybe the BBQ summer will arrive next year, I live in hope!!!

Snap! Also had 19.0mm of rain here today (some parts of Devon/Cornwall had more) bringing the monthly total up to a very wet 171.6mm

Edit: or yesterday maybe... that would be one heck of a downpour to have dropped 19mm of rain in the last 15 mins!:)

Colected 19.1mm at 9 GMT. So now 191.1mm for July, within a whisker of the 200 club. And there's now a hefty shower, so we might be there already.

Farming is at a standstill up here, as last year. Some late haymakers have not yet touched the crop and the silage makers, looking to get in a second crop, cannot get machinery on the land without doing damage.

MR DATA. Re your list of wet Julys. Where in England and Wales were the rainfall readings taken and how trustworthy the instumentataion? In your list you have 139.4 for 2007, whereas we had 228.5mm. That may easy to explain by altitude / regional difference of course. However I wonder about the very early data.

The old observatory at Stonyhurst College is not far from here. It's one of the oldest meteorologiical stations n the country started in the 1840s (I have precise date somewhere). I've been fortunate to see the early archives at Stonyhurst and there was much correspondence between observers in the 19th century about the design, testing and development of equipment. Letters exchanged with Dines, Fitzroy etc.

Even now, as the met office inspectors relate, the collecting of rain is not a precise art. There are ghastly stories of rain still dutifully collected daily from overgrown or over exposed gauges or from wonky gauges which had been hit by tractors, or (eek!) one catching splash from a greenhouse gutter.

Yep must be a little rain shield around here, the monthly total stands at just 78mm for Gloucester.

just hit 70mm for the month, here yesterday - but a third of that total was on the 16/17th. So not too bad in general.

Rainfall records have been pretty good since at least the 1860s with British Rainfall producing an annual report on the rainfall throughout the British Isles for that year. The one thing about rainfall is that you can get huge variations over short distances that you don't get with sunshine nor temperature measurements.

Eg. I could record 23C, 8 hours of sunshine and 0mm rain

5 miles away same figures but they could record 25mm of rain because they were hit by a thunderstorm and it missed me.

Another 13.4mm this morning, meaning we're now at 130.7mm - more than July 2007.

Hmmm what a difference a day makes, we burst through through the 100mm mark yesterday afternoon and are up to 109mm now. Still a lot lower than many others though.

139.9 mm including today's rainfall, just 0.8 mm short of the July record. It looks as though it will now be down to the rainfall coming in for Saturday arriving before 0900 to break it.

Some persistant looking rain in Western areas this evening, and a wet night for many.

So final rainfall figures for July are going to rise further.

It's a pretty wet August here too so far, with 6mm of rain since midnight and it's pelting down out there.

My running total for the summer so far is 260.4mm.

"Rain days" here run from 09 GMT to 09 GMT. So only just completed July.

We operate one of the daily rainfall observation sites here for the Met Office.

We started readings in Sept 1968. Same site, same kit since then.

July 2009 total is 208.7 mm. Only 3 dry days.

July average is 99.9 mm.

This July was the 3rd wettest recorded here. Beaten by July 1988 with 248.5 mm and by the notorious July 2007 with 252.2 mm.

We consider a month over 200 mm to be a very wet month, more common in the autumn and early winter.

Farming up in these hills is in a bad way yet again despite a splendid June. Late haymakers are at a halt. Cattle are poaching saturated pastures. Machinery can't get on the land without causing damage.

We did have more rain later yesterday another 2 or 3mm still the 2nd wettest july on record here 20mm short of 2007.

Had a look at the average max temps this July aswell which are lower to 2008 at 19c

2008 was 19.7c

2007 17.9c

Summer ave max very little in it now after the warmer than average June.

2008...18.9c

2009...19.1c

Late haymakers are at a halt. Cattle are poaching saturated pastures. Machinery can't get on the land without causing damage.

Tell me about it.

213mm the final July figure.

This sort of amount tends to be reserved for the October to January period here, and even then they are far from regular.

Getting on for 300% of the average July rainfall as it is one of the drier months here.

As some rain set in yesterday evening giving 3.2mm we finished the month at 175.0mm which is far higher than July 2008's total of 105.3mm.

Days totaling

Above 20mm: 1 (21st at 27.0mm)

Above 10mm: 7

Above 2mm: 18

Above 0.2mm: 24

So a very wet month here with 24 days of measurable rain recorded and although there was only 1 day that totaled above 20mm 3 other days reached 19mm (the 11th, 16th and 29th) which reached 19.0, 19.2 and 19.0mm respectively.
