Borrowdale working again. 115mm and rising.

Is that today?!

38mm since midnight here now, and 11.4º. The river's risen perhaps 8 inches, but is still no cause for concern....yet.

Teesdale, co Durham. Currently in penrith.

I think that is in error as it's about 50 - 60 mm above anyone else in the same area. It's also Davis kit which tends to overdo heavy rain.

But Borrowdale is the wettest place in England generally, so 5 miles can make an enormous difference I should imagine.

I agree. Seathwaite (wettest place in England) just a couple of mile away

it certainly can which is why I'm not dismissing it out of hand-it does seem high but as you rightly comment it is on average the wettest area in England. If this amount of rain is falling on the higher hills it is very very serious for those areas downstream, and for the next 24-36 hours, compounded to some extent as I've indicated in my blog by tidal effects.

Some local old hag was commenting yesterday that she thought the Eden wouldn't rise as high today as it did yesterday because of the tide in the Solway. I understand that a river could empty quicker in an estuary with a low-tide, but surely the tide, 50 miles away and 600ft down can't make any difference to the river level in Appleby? I shall read your blog.

Still raining, 42mm since midnight now and 167mm over the past week.

Should pass through the 50mm barrier since midnight shortly (175mm since last Friday), but compared to Keswick, this is nothing.

11.9C and 22mph average wind speed.

What is the water levels like?

Fine in Appleby today, which I'm quite surprised at, but then the rain hasn't really been lashing it down all day, just very steady. I'm still surprised at how well the river's coping. The roads on the other hand...
