When do we all think -20°C will be reached during this continuing and seemingly never-ending extreme cold spell north of the border?

Can't be long now until -20°C is reached - can it?

All time lowest in UK is -27.2°C. Surely that won't be broken?

When was the last -20°C anyway?

Let's hear your thoughts from all over the UK, not just up here :cold:

I've been checking this every night and it seems every afternoon under clear skies we get to about -13/14/15/16 in Tulloch Bridge, Dalwhinnie, Aviemore, Braemar, Loch Glascarnoch or Altnaharra only for cloud to trundle in later in the night and deny us the magic -20. I would have thought under this upcoming easterly winds, at least at first, should be fairly slack, skies fairly clear and uppers very cold up north. With over a foot of snow widely over most of Scotland i'd be suprised if we didn't get a -20 by the end of the week, but i've been thinking that for over a week now! I believe the last -20 was at Kinbrace at the beginning of March 2001.

Yeah, it's teasing us by going no lower than -16.

Few years ago ( I think 2007, maybe 2006 :D ) -18 was recorded. I saved the image on an old PC for interests sake, but have since lost it. That's the lowest I've seen on a chart. Let's see what happens in coming days, even tonight - it's clear skies and bitter already :)

Thanks for confirmation on last -20 :-)

The BBC presenters' favourite number for this spell seems to be -16C. I would have thought that this would easily be exceeded at some point. -18C has been recorded in places like Altnahara / Aviemore etc in fairly short cold snaps (in largely mild winters).

My bet is a -22.8C in Loch Glascarnoch.

Mike, if it was in old money, then the celsius conversion is even lower at -33C lol.

January 1998 was mild 5.2c

February 1998 as extremely mild 7.3c

March 1998 was very mild 7.9c

And yet a brief cold surge at the beginning of March managed -17.0c.

I think -20c is almost a dead cert at one point. Perhaps closer to -19.0c.

Does anybody know when the last -20 was recorded in England or Wales? At a guess I'd say it was maybe somewhere in Cumbria in December 1995 or if not sometime pre 1987??

What a lovely question, feels great that it is being asked as early as December...

I don't know how to guess when, but on the other hand, I bet it happens on more than one occasion this winter and not just up the North of the UK either.

-25C anybody?

A small amount of paraffin will prevent diesel freezing lol.

i thought the coldest temp recorded was -29c in Altnaharra in 95-96 if my memory serves me right at the same time it was -20c here its not that unusual where i stay to record -15c in fact christmas eve it was -13c so im sure some place will record -20c in this cold spell but probably not -29c again aggressive.gif

For many years, the record was assumed to be -30.5C at Blackadder in Berwickshire on the 4th December 1879 but the reading is now discredited as non-standard.

1980/81. I remember Michael Fish doing the forecast and he said he had to have some new temperature stickers made

for -28 degrees as he didn't have any that went that low!

This was in the olden days, of course........

Not sure myself, though it got down to -18 degrees in Windermere on the night of the 28/29 dec 1995, so it is quite plausible somewhere such as Shap or Spadeadam recorded a -20 degrees on the same night.

Early March 2001 was very cold over much of Scotland and N England thanks to a slack arctic northerly flow and snow cover.

Coldest nights in the north tend to occur under such conditions as opposed to easterlies which bring greater cold to the south especially the midlands and welsh marches areas.

I think it was the -23.3C recorded at Caldecott on 13th January 1987.
