Its back, finally we have some Atlantic activity, which from my point of view can only be a good thing, as this winter has been seriously short of decent winter storms.

Hi Cookie, we come from just over the water ion Skye, there certainly is a breakthrough expected for a while anyway, but I get a feeling that the greenland high will build and the scandi high will remain sturbborn for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for opening this up Cookie. Its 5 years ago tommorow the 11th when the big storm hit us. This week does look windy again but thankfully nothing as serious as Jan 2005.

From one addiction to another :whistling::(

Let's hope we either get a full scale Atlantic barrage, or back to cold again. A good storm would be nice though.

Good stuff! Storm watching seems strangely attractive now, given the length of the snow and cold, and also that the only element missing was a good spell of strong winds and heavy PPN. Extremes of weather are good, even just a decent atlantic low with a nice showery northwesterly to follow is quite satisfying, but being stuck at 3C with no sign of it getting warmer/colder is terrible! 18Z update:

    Bit of an upgrade perhaps?

Maybe even gales in east central!

I don't believe it! As if easterly or northerly winds aren't bad enough here in a cold spell for lack of decent snow, southerly gales are useless here too  Do I ever stop whinging?? :)

Cookie, are you getting excited yet? :)

The thing about wind is that, unlike snow or rain or ice, there's very little trace of it afterwards. It is purely an in the moment thrill, similar to thunder I guess. The last biggie I remember was this beauty, 5 years ago almost to the day - http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/archive/ra/2005/Rrea00120050112.gif

Amazingly, the highest temperature of the winter was recorded that night - 12C, which is odd considering uppers were around -5! I think I would've liked January '93, with some huge storms combined with huge snow depths at times.

Anyway, enjoy your perfect vantage point from the land that trees forgot!

GFS 06z has 50mph sustained wind forecast for you on Saturday. Having said that the same GFS run had 25mph sustained winds forecast for here today and the wind has been recorded at 15mph at worst.

looking very windy for friday and into early saturday in particluar, severe gales likely around the north and west with the potential for gusts in excess of 70mph.

all the talk of snow is distracting from what could be quite dangerous.

    welcome back atlantic!!! :yahoo:

I can see where you are coming from with this post James, however, I think this storm will only badly affect the far west coasts and islands. GFS always overcooks these things and the Fax Charts don't look bad at all:
