At the moment the Eruption is a lot smaller than St Helens so hopefully we will not see any effects on the ground.

We just need the cloud to clear which is unlikely at the moment.

I presume this dust plume will make for some interesting sunsets?

Well this must be the month from hell for BA, what with the strikes now this potential flight disrupter!

Has this ever happened in the UK before ? Airports being closed ?

And thanks Roger. Great post as always and I now know what I saw in Brighton in January this year - Sun Dogs ! They were such a spectacular sight ! Sorry, slightly off topic I know...

Odd, 'pictures taken by a plane flying over the region' - but most of the UK air traffic miles away grounded......

All flights in and out of the UK for 6 hours from 12pm-6pm will be grounded, (all flights inside British airspace) has this ever happened before?? Though it does look like the dense ash is moving East from Iceland into the Scandi region

I am extremely glad my sister came back from holiday yesterday, it must be absolute chaos at the airports and some of you are saying it could just be the start of prolonged disruption!

I guess it's just sheer bad luck that the weather patterns are set how they are, and look to get even worse over the weekend.

Sunny spells here nothing out of the ordinary, visually except that I live under a busy airspace and I have not seen a single jet airliner flyover.

Last few days planes landing at Stansted have been flying over here as they normally do. They were coming over earlier, but seem to have stopped now already.

An interesting event this.

The quietness must be quite weird for those that

live very close to normally busy airports.

It's a full month 'til I fly from Humberside airport.

Hope there aren't re-occurrences, but suspect there will be.

None.

Depends wether it creates a world wide blanket that covers the Earth for the next 6 months and cuts out 95% of the sun light ?

If thats not going to happen, I concur

Climate none , weather a bit ?

Apparently Airplane engines can 'see it'. I assume they dont want muitple engine failures and plane crashes ?.

However if you want to give them a call that you cant see anything go ahead rolleyes.gif

Im just glad its not windy, with flights grounded we only have the ferry's at the moment, if the ferry's where cancelled we really would be cut off.

At the moment it won't as it isn't big enough to do that.

The last eruption to send ash our way was Grimsvotn in 2004 I believe. However I can't recall flights being cancelled at the time.

No that's just called 'Scottish Weather' Mr M.

Interesting isn't it? As far as I can make out it's very high (plane crusing altitude) and not visible, but could cause usn a very good sunset tonight.

Is there any chance any of this could give us a dusting?
