Report & Pictures Chase Day 18

Started Friday May 14th in Amarillo. Chase target today was either SE New Mexico or the Big Bend area of Texas around Midland. Along the way things started to change so quickly that I changed my Target Position. A line of Supercells had formed around the I-20 Area. We had a couple of choices to make, either swerve around the line or Punch through the now Tornado warned Cells. Just North of Lamesa we encountered a developing Storm and punched through from the North, we encountered Golf Ball Sized Hail and when we came through towards the Base saw a Nice Roping Mid Level Funnel Cloud.

We then had a decision to make and we carefully Threaded our way between 2 Supercells from working out the Storm Motions and Car Speed. We came through the gap perfectly to clear skies to the South and 2 Supercells to our West and East. After that is was picture perfect Structure from 3pm until 9pm. We saw another 3 Supercells dropping SE All the Time towards the I-10 Corridoor shooting Lightning and Insane Structure. We had a brief chat with 2 Sheriffs at Big Lake and heard the Tornado Sirens wailing. After that we headed east to Senora and let the Supercell overrun the Hotel, no hail to be had but strong Thunderstorm wind gusts and frequent Cg Lightning.

WEll... I don't imagine my day will compare. Decided to head to NM and play in the sunshine for most of the day waiting for initiation. The storms the other guys were on were stealing my moisture :unsure:

First attempt at an updraft.. It looked good but was never going to make it

New updrafts north of me, near Artesia. The rear storm went up rediculously fast and had a nice overshooting top at this point. This area is a complete radar black hole with the storm not showing on any radars at all.. The mountain range blocks the radar beam from the nearby Holloman AFB. Will make me think twice about chasing in this area again!

The black, evil looking base of this storm, whilst in it's HP Supercellular phase, complete with a nice inflow cloud to the north. The whole storm was scraping the ground and any sustained rotation would have surely produced some brief spinups, but the dryline was backbuilding to the south, and after a few minutes, the storm became outflow dominant and started kicking dust and dirt up like nobody's business..

Headed east in the hope of putting myself in the firing line for some nighttime lightning, but the storm which is severe warned will pass north. It does look interesting and I'm almost tempted to head back out in the car!

What a day! It's hard to explain just how good that was.

Our positioning today was perfect, we had an amazing view of everything and some of the things we saw was just outrageous!

I will never forget today that's for sure.

And to top it off a nice show from the hotel...
