Besides the persistant cold so far, this month is very noteworthy in terms of how dry it has been here in Cumbria. So far we have seen little precipitation almost nil precipitation in the form of rain, and in terms of snow the most we have seen from a single fall is 5 inches on the 4th. Most other falls have seen a couple of cms, an inch at best and from Saturdays fall we saw an inch.

Whereas many other parts have seen significant falls of snow which will boost the overall precipitation levels.

Still I'd be interested to know what the actual rainfall total for england and wales currently is and where else has seen little rain/snow so far this month. I suspect much of NW Highlands, south west scotland and north west midlands (staffordshire/shropshire areas) areas are well below normal - two areas which have also missed out on heavy snow especially north west midlands.

A very light rain shower once this month and a little light drizzle at times is the only wet stuff we've had. Snow wise it's been a few cm at best the other week (nothing so far this spell) so yes a very very dry month here. Of course very cold though.

Hi fellow Cumbrian. As the lake frozen over?

Very dry here so far this month with 25.2mm up to 0900 this morning, about 33% of average for the 1st-20th. It may well challenged 2004, with 52.0mm, as the driest December on record.

10.8mm so far in Crosby (my nearest available station). England & Wales average so far is 21mm (to the 19th):

Very cold Decembers are often dry due to blocking. The driest December on record in England & Wales since 1766 (1788 with 8.9mm) was the joint second coldest in that timeframe. The coldest December on record (1890) averaged 34.4mm.
