February 2011, Llanwnnen, Lampeter

Very mild, rainfall a little above average.

The re-appearance of a very mild Winter month after several years absence. Few frosts and no snow falling at all, only a very little barely noticeable sleet on 2 days mid month. The most remarkable statistic being the lack of below average maxima, with no day failing to reach 7c.

Although it rained on 24 days out of 28, much of this was light, and the total was only a little above the average

1st- 7th: Mild, cloudy, unsettled and windy with gales at times. A couple of slight frosts.

8th: Quite a sharp frost, sunny morning, then cloudy and mild.

9th- 12th: Very mild and unsettled, light rain and drizzle at times with some sunny spells.

13th-16th: Near normal temperatures, spell of rain and the odd spot of sleet. Sunny intervals, touches of frost by night.

17th- 26th: Mild to very mild, rain at times, rather cloudy but some sunny spells. What seemed like a localised foehn effect produced the month's highest reading of 13.6c on the 19th. Heavy rain late on the 25th made this the wettest day with 21.6mm.

27th/ 28th: Mostly dry apart from a few showers 27th, cooler with night frost, and a sunny final day.

I believe the warmest day over the Winter was the 25/2 where 15.5c was recorded in Writtle, Essex. Can someone confirm this? Also what was the lowest temperature?

February had a mean temperature of 7.6C; only 1998 with 8.8C has been warmer. In the RAF Finningley records 1942-1995 no February recorded higher than 7.3C (1945), the next highest was 6.9C in 1969, so the mildest February for over 60 years of records.

Mean temp=7.6C(3.7C)

Avge Max=10.3(6.5)

Avge Min=4.8(0.9)

Absolute Max=15.9C on 26 and absolute Min=-0.3C on 15th

Rainfall=49.8mm so well above average

days of snow=1, none lying

Days with air frost=2, ground frost=3

1 day with fog at 0900 clock time and no thunder or hail

This was the warmest February since 2002, although the mean maximum was a little short of that of February 2008. It was another wet February, but not quite as wet as February 2010. The first third was very mild and windy with plenty of cloud on most days, but two very sunny days (the 8th and 10th), the middle third was mostly dull with close to average temperatures and the last third became warmer with a few brighter days. The maximum on the 24th was the highest in February at the location since 2004.

What a turnaround from that exceptional December- this month was more than 6 degrees warmer!

The mildest since 2002. It was also the third dull and wetter than average February in a row. Along with 1997 and 2008, it was the least snowiest February aswell with only 1 day of falling snow and none lying. It also joined 1990, 1997 and 2002 in recording only a single air frost, though in the 2011 case it was the highest monthly minima on record with a temperature of -0.4C.

The month was characterised by a mild, unsettled and often windy first 10 days, with the 4th, 5th and 6th all recording a mean temperature above 10°C. There were then some damaging winds on the 7th, accompanied by an abrupt temperature drop. It turned cooler and calmer during the middle of the month, though there was no sunshine between the 17th and 23rd due to a weak flow off the North Sea. The 19th - 21st was the coldest period of the month, failing to reach 4.6C throughout, but it remained above 2.6C due to the persistent cloudcover. The final week was then mild and wetter but sunshine was still limited. A brief fall of sleet on the final day prevented the month from being the only completely 'snowless' February since my records began in 1982.

Overall, another mild, dull and wet February. Certainly one to forget.

Dull and wet sums it up.

Average max = 7.7c

Average min = 1.7c

Gives 4.7c overall average.

Rainfall 105 mms is 2.5 times the average for here. Wettest since 2001 though in that year most of it fell as snow and sleet.

45 hours of sunshine makes it the dullest since my local Met O station started recording in the fifties.

There were seven days with air frost but nothing below -2c. Highest was 12.3c which was the highest since October 2010.

Two days with snow falling but only one with cover at 9AM.

Rather late with putting this here.

A very mild month. Rainfall was not far off average, and sunshine was below average as it seemed through much of the month. the lowest min of -2.3C is the highest value for that variable I have recorded in a winter month. A big contrast to December!

(note station's meteorological day is midnight-midnight, except for highest/lowest overnight min)

February 2011 stats:

Highest max: 13.9°C, 57.0°F (24th)

Lowest max: 7.4°C, 45.4°F (28th)

Highest overnight min: 10.8°C, 51.4°F (night of 5th-6th)

Lowest overnight min: -2.3°C, 27.8°F (night of 1st to 2nd) (though on the evening of the 31st it went below -4C, with -7.4C in the morning.)

Highest daily mean: 11.3°C 52.3°F (5th Feb)

Lowest daily mean: 3.6°C, 38.4°F (14th Feb)

Mean max: 10.5°C 50.9°F

Mean min: 3.5°C, 38.3°F

Mean: 7.5°C, 40.5°F - about 2.7°C above average

Wettest day: 20.8mm (13th)

Monthly total: 87.0mm - not far from average (a very small amount dew or frost melt)

Days of rain over 2.0mm: 10

Days of falling sleet/snow: 0

Days of thunder heard: 0

Average wind speed: 6.2mph

Max gust: 36mph (13th and 27th)
