Continuing the very dry and very warm theme since November 2010 in particular (the dry theme) It was also a windy month bringing condions closer to what you'd expect in the middle of a hot summer. After an incredibly warm April, the mean maxima was way beloow Aprils average and 0.1c below April as a whole.

The frequency of +20c days were reduced in comparison to April

May was the third consecutive very dry month here with only 23% of the average rainfall. The rain was generally in the form of short although sometimes sharp showers with thunder on one day. The month ended with temperatures a little above average; daily maxima were very unexceptional and unusually below that of the (exceptional) April, no days could be described as hot. Sunshine hours were a little above average at 227 hours.

Weather stats for May 2011, Cleadon, Tyne and Wear (all averages estimated for 1971-2000)

Mean Maximum 16.0C (+2.1)

Mean Minimum 8.7C (+2.0)

Mean Temp 12.4C (+2.1)

Highest Maximum 20.6C (8th)

Lowest Maximum 12.5C (3rd)

Highest Minimum 11.8C (18th)

Lowest Minimum 1.6C (4th)

Total precipitation 19mm (37%)

Highest daily total 15mm (7th)

Total days >1mm precipitation: 5

No days with sleet/snow, thunder, fog, but 1 day of hail.

This was the warmest May recorded at Cleadon in a record going back to 1993- May 2001 had a higher average maximum and May 1998 had a higher average minimum, but the mean for May 2011 just exceeded that for the previous warmest Mays in 1998 and 1999. Presumably the very "westerly" nature of May, preventing sea breezes from developing, was the main reason why it turned out so warm. The warmth was consistent rather than outstanding, with only one significantly colder-than-average night and no significantly colder-than-average days.

The first half of May was mostly sunny with notably warm temperatures by day and near-average temperatures by night. Although there was a very wet day on the 7th, the subsequent sunshine-and-showers days saw Cleadon dodge a large majority of the showers, hence the low monthly rainfall total. The second half of the month was much cloudier, with temperatures mostly slightly above average by day, and much above average by night. Met Office sunshine maps suggest that sunshine for the month probably came out a little above normal.

With two of the three spring months setting new records and March slightly warmer than average, Spring 2011 just pipped Spring 2007 as the warmest spring since I began recording, and it was the driest, too, with only 43mm of rain (29% of the estimated average for 1971-2000). It was the first spring without any days of sleet/snow falling since 2003.

May 2011 (14.12c) wasn't as warm as 2008 (14.70c) but was the driest I have recorded since beginning my records

in summer 2003. Of the 51.5mm rainfall, 25mm fell in just a few hours overnight on the 7th-8th! This was the first

time that the May average max was cooler than the preceding Aprils' average max. Intruguingly the highest and lowest

temperatures of the month came within just a few days.

For Warminster, Wiltshire ...

Average max = 19.15c (Highest = 24.6c on 6th May)

Average min = 9.10c (Lowest = 3.3c on 4 May)

Mean = 14.12c

Dry days = 17

Rain days = 14

Rainfall = 51.5mm

Your stats back up my perception of May as being preety average temp wise with slightly below average maxima cancelled out by warmer minima thanks to persistant westerly airstreams and also a wet month. Not sure of sunshine levels but I suspect these were preety average. For the northwest quarter of the country Cumbria, SW Scotland, W/NW Scotland and N Ireland - May 2011 overall was preety dissapointing considering how with June it is usually the best month of the year for settled weather and with April the driest month of the year. I still say April and May 2011 happened the wrong way round.
