Britain set for 10-day freeze as temperatures plunge

Of course James Madden always takes things to the next level

James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather said more wintry showers in March could make it the “snowiest on recordâ€. He said: “March could turn out to be one of the snowiest that we have experienced for quite some time. “There may also be the potential risk of it becoming one of the snowiest March periods on record, and it will be exceptionally cold at times too.â€

Here comes the snow again as Siberian chill sweeps in

BRITAIN is in the grip of a fortnight-long Arctic blast with up to three inches of snow expected in many areas today.

The country shivered again yesterday as temperatures plunged to -8C (18F) and wintry showers fell.Forecasters warned bitter gales from northern Europe will sweep across the UK causing heavy snowfall today. They said the Siberian weather could last into March bringing widespread harsh frosts and icy roads. The Met Office has upgraded a level-2 cold weather health alert to a more serious amber level-3 which is in force until Sunday. It said the prolonged cold snap could present a risk to elderly and vulnerable people – with travel disruption into next week.

Jonathan Powell, of Vantage Weather Services, said that with biting winds it could even feel as low as -15C in exposed regions overnight – with snow on Sunday night in London and the South-east. Netweather predicted today could “feel like the coldest day of winter†with up to three inches of snow likely in parts

Forecaster Paul Michaelwaite said a “cutting†wind chill will make its mark until at least the beginning of next week. He said today “will feel the coldest it has all winter,†adding: “Wind chill is cutting like a knife and making temperatures feel Siberian. We’re pulling in continental air from the east, and that cold will continue to deepen into the weekend.â€

The Met Office has forecast snow in the South-east, South-west, central and northern regions over the next few days.Forecaster Dan Williams said: “There are also some snow flurries around which could turn more persistent by Monday.“Over the next few days temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing overnight with a more widespread mixture of rain, sleet and snow from Monday.†Temperatures have tumbled this week with overnight lows of -8.3C recorded in Scotland while Cumbria shivered at a chilly -5.8C.

Thousands of gritters are on standby to deal with icy roads and snow while railway operators are poised to de-ice trains.Peter Box, of the Local Government Association, said: “Gritting teams will be out in force to try to ensure main roads remain passable.“Tens of thousands of tons of salt were spread during the January cold snap, but there are still hundreds of thousands of tons in council depots.â€

February Cold Snap Takes Hold Of UK

The UK is in the grip of an unusually cold snap, with freezing winds and snow flurries sweeping across the nation. Strong gusts of up to 50mph will mean that temperatures hovering around freezing point could feel more like -10C (14F) in some areas. The temperatures are much colder than normal for this time of year, when we should expect averages of around 6-8C (43-46.4F).

Light snow fell in central London on Friday with visitors to the newly opened Shard - western Europe's tallest building that stands at 1,016ft (310m) - reporting seeing a few flakes. Temperatures in the capital are set to plunge to -2C (28.4F) later tonight, with the wind chill making it feel even colder.

Further dustings of snow are forecast in eastern and central England on Friday, as the half-term holiday nears its end. Up to a couple of centimetres are due over the southern Pennines, the hills of Yorkshire and some parts of Kent overnight. The cold spell is set to continue over the weekend due to raw easterly winds. On Saturday there is an increasing risk of snow flurries coming in from the east and spreading across the west towards Wales leaving a dusting of snow behind.

It will remain cold on Sunday with more wintry showers before temperatures start to rise on Monday.

Weather Online's March, April and May outlooks

Issued: Saturday 23rd February 2013

Duty forecaster: Simon Keeling & Captain Bob

Cold weather continuing, and the risk of some snow

After the wet weather of the winter it is good news to find that high pressure is expected t dominate through March. This brings plenty of dry weather over all part of the country. It is likely to be cold at first with the winds from the east, and the likelihood is that the middle of the month may become colder, before we see a rise of temperature towards the end of March.

1/3 to 7/3*

Temperatures are expected to remain below normal for the time of year during this period across the UK. Most places are dry, although he far south of England could become more unsettled with some outbreak of rain later.

*8/3 to 15/3*

Hints that during this period temperatures may fall. This could lead to a short lived snap of cold weather and there chance of some late season snowfall, although this no lasting long. Generally though it will be dry with sunny spells, although sharp frosts overnight.

16/3 to 23/3*

A cold start t the week, but then temperatures are expected to rise as high pressure becomes established again. Most parts of the country remain in dry conditions with good spells of sunshine. It could become warm towards the end of the week.

*24/3 to 31/3*

The end of March is expected to remain on the mild side. High pressure is the dominant feature again across the whole of the UK and Ireland with dry weather for most Temperatures are likely to be above normal, although there is a risk of some overnight frosts.

Simon & Capn Bob

Dry start to April

Not great for May

Issued: Saturday 23rd February 2013

Duty forecasters: Simon Keeling & Captain Bob

*APRIL*

High pressure is expected to be in control of the weather for the first two thirds of the month. This brings with it the probability that the weather will be dominated by dry conditions.

Temperatures are likely to be close to normal for the time of year. By around the 20th there are indications that conditions may start to change. Temperatures are expected to rise as we enter a transition period. This transition period is expected to be characterised by a few days of rain, although this is probably not going to be to persistent. However, the transition does signal the start of a breakdown of spring conditions.

*MAY*

If you want sunshine, now might be the time to stop reading! Hopes are not high that May will be a fine one. The start of the month may be dry with sunny spells and the remnants of the last few weeks of high pressure close by. However, a change is expected to take place early in the month. Winds may well turn to the southwest as the jet stream becomes established over or just to the south. This would bring low pressure systems very close by with bands of cloud and rain sweeping through the UK and Ireland with temperatures slightly below normal. It will be windy at times too. The only hope of fair weather is for Scotland where, if the jet stream is sufficiently far south, may stay drier, although with some significant overnight frosts. Note though that confidence in Scotland being dry is not high.

THE council’s weather service, which monitors the town’s rainfall, hours of sunshine and tides is set to be scrapped after more than 130 years. Hastings Borough Council employs a meteorologist, together with three assistants, who could all face the axe if the recommendation is given the go-ahead at next Wednesday’s budget meeting. All four work part-time on a rota basis and the service costs £8,000 a year to run.

Many people, such as fishermen, use the tide data provided by the authority. The weather and high tides are also printed in the Observer each week. Cllr Jeremy Birch, leader of Hastings Borough Council, said the authority was having to face making tough decisions in the wake of losing £1.7 million in Government funding, as reported in the Observer last month. He said: “We are carrying out budget reductions across the whole council and the weather service is something that we have had to look at.

“We are hoping we can continue this service because there are a lot of people in Hastings who would be interested in operating it voluntarily. It does not require a huge amount of work.†David Powell, borough meteorologist, has been gathering weather data for Hastings for more than 15 years. He said: “It would be a great shame if the service did stop as it has been operating for 138 years since 1875. “If it is stopped it may never be started up again.

“We supply more than the necessary information to the Met Office and Weathernet, the Environment Agency, as well as Weather magazine, produced by the Royal Meteorological Society. “The only time we did not supply information was during the war.â€

Kevin Boorman, the council’s spokesman and marketing manager, said: “It would obviously be great if we could get volunteers to help us run this service from April, it’s always great to see Hastings being the hottest or sunniest place in the country.â€

Winter's bowing out with a chilly cheerio: More snow and below average temperatures set to stay until end of the week

  • Whole country will feel the chill as flurries of snow drift in from Russia
  • North west of Scotland may see bright patches and temperatures of 4C

Today there is likely to be more snow across England and Wales, with areas of high ground, especially in the South East, most at risk. Temperatures will be slightly warmer, with highs of 7C (45F) in the North and 6C (43F) in the South, but high winds from the East will make the temperature feel more like -1C (30F) or -2C (28F).

Met Office forecaster Charlie Powell said: ‘Cold weather looks to continue through much of the next week, with brisk winds in the South accentuating the cold. ‘We could see a few snow flurries from time to time, particularly across the East. Overnight temperatures will fall to -3C (27F).’ Laura Caldwell of MeteoGroup said: ‘Long term, looking into March it’s unlikely we’ll get any warmer spring-like weather any time soon. This is because of the north-westerly winds blowing down from the Arctic, which look likely to persist.’

Region to bask in sunshine as forecasters predict no more snow this week

SNOW still lay on the ground in higher parts of the region today (Monday, February 25) after a weekend of freezing conditions (MON FEB 25) – but forecasters said the temperatures are expected to rise this week. Consett in County Durham and other higher parts of the region saw up to three inches of snow on Saturday, with some low-lying areas getting flurries and a scattering of snow on the ground. The North-East and North Yorkshire should see temperatures of up to 7 C this week and sunshine as an area of high pressure moves across the UK. The likelihood of snow in the next week to ten days is very low, said forecasters.

John Lee, forecaster at the MeteoGroup, said: “The next few days are likely to be dry and it is becoming slightly less cold, although temperatures are still below the seasonal average. “The North-East will see a high of about 5C tomorrow (TUESDAY) and possibly up to 7C on Wednesday.“The risk of more snow this year is lessening all the time because we are coming to the end of winter and heading into spring. This week we are also under the influence of high pressure which means that many areas will stay dry but also bright.†However, he said more snow this year could not be entirely ruled out until well into the Spring.
