FREEZING TEMPERATURES COULD LAST UNTIL MID-APRIL

BRITAIN’S coldest start to March for 43 years threatens more snow for the next 10 days. And commuters could be facing delays as the Met office predicted “below average†temperatures until at least March 26. The chill is expected to last until mid-April. And Government weathermen expect the mercury to plummet this morning to -8C in parts of England and Scotland with temperatures at their coldest in the North and East. The RAC has even warned drivers to consider axing journeys when snow hits. Spokesman Simon Williams said: “With continued wintry conditions, we urge people in regions forecast to be seriously affected by snow to consider whether journeys are necessary.†Met Office forecaster Helen Chivers said: “Everyone should keep up to date with forecasts and warnings during this cold snap and plan for forecast conditions. “The lowest temperatures on Wednesday night were expected to be -6 to -8C in the countryside of England and Scotland.

“Next week is forecast to be often cloudy with further spells of rain or snow. “Northern, eastern and central parts have the greatest chance of any snow, leading to accumulations in places.†And Leon Brown, from the Weather Channel, said: “There’s no sign at the moment that we will see above normal temperatures for the rest of March.†According to Met Office figures, this month’s average temperature is 4.0C across central England, covering the region between London, Manchester and Bristol. But records show the last time March was colder over a full month in central England was 1970 at 3.7C. Days, usually 10C, have been 1C this week in parts, with nights normally 2.5C, well below freezing.

Snow for days... & still chilly until April

BRITAIN faces more snow over the next ten days — as the cold snap was predicted to continue into April. The Met Office warned of hill snow in the West today, spreading across the Midlands and East tomorrow — and predicted frost and ice through next week. Yesterday the white stuff continued to fall across North Yorkshire. It has been the chilliest start to March since 1970 with average temperatures of just 4°C across central England. And they are set to stay below average across the UK until mid-April. Last year the UK had the warmest March on record, averaging 7.7°C. British Weather Service meteorologist Jim Dale said: “People hoping for a fine, warm March have been very disappointed.†Met Office forecaster Helen Chivers added: “Everyone should keep up to date with warnings and plan for conditions.â€

Wet and wintry weekend in store as forecasters predict another temperature plunge and snow next week

Many parts of Britain are facing a miserable wet weekend - with forecasters predicting yet more freezing temperatures and snow well into next week. Despite conditions overnight being milder than previous nights and temperatures warming, cold wintry showers are expected throughout much of the UK this weekend. Forecasters say heavy rain will fall tonight with conditions in London, East Anglia and the south east being 'pretty wet and grim' tomorrow morning. Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said: 'It is going to be feeling rather cold this weekend and very unsettled. We will see longer spells of rain and possibly sleet and snow at times. It will be an unsettled, cold weekend for all of us.' Despite temperatures warming overnight, East Anglia did see a light dusting of snow. However, the country did not see a repeat of the frosty conditions of yesterday morning.

Today, forecasters warned that the unseasonably cold weather which we have been experiencing this week is likely to make a return next week. Temperatures are likely to plunge again on Tuesday and Wednesday with more snow expected. Mr Snell said: 'We are expecting across most parts of the country - particularly the north - on Tuesday and Wednesday that temperatures will again take a tumble and there will be an increased chance of snow at lower levels. 'At the moment it does look like it will be cold for all of us during the middle part of the week.' The unseasonably cold weather caused chaos on the Channel Islands this week which saw the worst snow storms in 26 years, leaving drifts up to 8ft deep. The airport on Guernsey had to be shut for two days while more than 15,000 tons of snow were removed from the runway.

The islands caught the same storms that crippled northern France, where shoulder-deep drifts led to Channel Tunnel trains being cancelled and long queues on the M20 as lorries waited for delayed ferries. Although most of the Guernsey and Jersey snow is now melting, weather men predict another cold snap next week. Danielle Stonebridge, 21, a Guernsey resident, said: ‘I have never seen snow like this before, my dad can remember something like this when he was around ten years old, but there is just so much of it. It brings the child out in me and I have been out in the snow playing, it has been great. 'Although it is hard to get around, a five minute journey took me three hours, the roads are absolute carnage.’

Keep warm and carry on: Snow, hail and frost forecast as unseasonable cold snap is expected to continue well into next week

Be prepared for yet more cold, wintry weather with forecasters predicting snow and hail as the unseasonable cold snap is expected to continue well into next week. Last week saw Britain's coldest March day for almost 30 years as more than two inches of snow fell in some parts of the country. And the misery is set to continue over the weekend with lower-than-average temperatures as well as frequent showers and chances of hail expected across the country. The Met office warned of another chilly night with a high risk of ice. Sunday will see persistent showers across the UK with sleet and snow likely in the North East and in some parts of the south. The cold weather is likely to continue well into next week. It should become slightly warmer by Friday but more unsettled at the same time.

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said: 'It is going to be feeling rather cold this weekend and very unsettled. We will see longer spells of rain and possibly sleet and snow at times. It will be an unsettled, cold weekend for all of us.' Forecasters warned that the unseasonably cold weather which we have been experiencing this week is likely to make a return next week. Hungary snow strands 10,000 motorway drivers

Tanks have been deployed to reach snowbound motorists in Hungary as cold weather causes transport chaos across central Europe. T-72 battle tanks trundled along icy roads, while thousands of people waited in cars on the M1 motorway from Budapest to Vienna. Many had been stuck on the road since Thursday evening.

The really sad part is the langauge it is written in because the article has a very valid point. If you looked beyond the manner in which itis written then you would see the point they are making.

Snow Warning: New Cold Snap Brings More Misery

Another cold snap is on its way, with parts of the country facing more snow and freezing temperatures, forecasters say. Scotland and the north of England are expected to see up to 20cm (eight inches) of snow build up from today into Wednesday morning, with temperatures dropping as low as minus 15C (5F) overnight. The cold weather also meant more misery for road and rail travellers on Monday morning with serious disruption on a number of key commuter routes. The Met Office has issued a yellow severe weather warning for today and tomorrow, urging those in the regions likely to be affected by snow to be aware. The Grampians, eastern parts of the Southern Uplands, the Lake District and the Pennines are expected to be hit hard.

Heavy rain and snow cause disruption

Heavy rainfall is causing flooding in the South West of England while snow has fallen in parts of the UK, with more disruption expected later.

In Devon and Cornwall, homes have flooded and drivers have been rescued from their cars. The Environment Agency has 18 flood warnings in place for the South West. The Met Office has two amber warnings for snow, covering much of the UK. Flights at Leeds Bradford Airport have been grounded due to the weather. The snow would cause travel disruption across northern parts of the UK on Friday, the BBC's Tomasz Schafernaker said. Some 20cm-40cm (8in-16in) of snow could fall in places.

'Immediate action'

Roads in northern parts of Wales, the Midlands into the Pennines, southern Scotland and Northern Ireland would be the worst affected on Friday, while gale force winds would blow snow and drifts across trans-Pennine routes.Heavy snow could continue into Saturday and Sunday, he said. He warned of flooding problems across the south and said parts of southern Cornwall and Devon could see 50-75mm of rain falling in a 24-48-hour period. We strongly urge people to sign up to flood warnings on the Environment Agency website, keep a close eye on local weather forecasts and be prepared for possible floodingâ€

Environment Agency

The warnings come just over a week before the start of British Summer Time. On Friday morning, roads closed because of snow included the A53 in Derbyshire, between the A54 Macclesfield main road junction in Buxton and the Thorncliff Road junction in Leek, and the A54 in Cheshire, between the Chester Road and Morreys Lane junctions. In Cornwall, the A39 in Perranarworthal was closed at Norway Inn because of flooding.

On Thursday night into Friday morning, areas of Cornwall - including Newlyn, Penzance, Mevagissy and St Ives - were flooded, with the fire service taking about 50 calls between 18:00 and 21:00. Areas of Devon, including Ashburton, were also affected while, in two separate incidents in Plymstock, people were rescued by fire crews after being stuck in their cars in flood water.

Sgt Dave Opara, from Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "There has been a considerable amount of rainfall across the force area. "There will be more to come throughout the night so the situation is not going to get much better too soon." As well as setting flood warnings - meaning "flooding is expected, immediate action required" - in the South West, the Environment Agency also has 80 flood alerts - meaning "flooding is possible, be prepared" - across England. Spokesman Ben Johnstone said: "We strongly urge people to sign up to flood warnings on the Environment Agency website, keep a close eye on local weather forecasts and be prepared for possible flooding." People should not try to wade or drive through any deep water, he added.

Hampden warning

The Met has one amber warning - meaning "be prepared" - for rain for some southern parts of Cornwall and Devon. There are also yellow warnings - meaning "be aware" - in place for areas including parts of eastern Scotland and parts of south-west Scotland. Belfast International Airport has warned passengers there could be delays on Friday and Saturday because of heavy rain and snow. Scotland has already borne the brunt of heavy snowfall, which made driving conditions hazardous and forced the closure of more than 100 schools earlier this week. Transport Scotland urged fans travelling to the World Cup qualifier between Scotland and Wales at Glasgow's Hampden stadium on Friday night to check travel information throughout the day in case of disruption.

AA head of operations Darron Burness, meanwhile, has warned of "a real witches' brew of driving wind, rain and snow" for drivers across the UK. "Drivers should be well prepared as even short journeys can quickly turn bad," he said. "Wherever you're going, take plenty of warm layers, check the travel reports before heading out and stick to the main roads where possible."

Why has March 2013 been worse than December and January?

The average temperature (day and night combined) for the UK this March to date is currently around 3C. It should normally be nearer 6C. With heavy snow and rain causing disruption across the country, BBC Weather presenter Louise Lear explains what is going on.

We'll start warming up in April

EASTER Sunday could offer Britain’s first big break from the freezing weather — with temperatures tipped to climb toward a balmy 14°C (57°F). The Met Office’s long range forecast predicts the run-up to Easter Sunday will start with heavy rain spreading south and turning to sleet and snow in the North. But the biting cold is due to give way to “nearer to normal†temperatures across the South by March 31 — Easter Sunday. Average temperatures for late March and early April are between 13 and 14°C. The week after Easter should be warmer, but will STILL carry a potential for snow. And the Met Office does not rule out a return to colder conditions further into April.
