December 1899 was an interesting month with a battle for a good portion of the month between a Scandinavian block and Atlantic systems trying to push in for the west.

Certainly an interesting month with quite 'unusual' cold synoptics of very different degrees - like the way low pressure squeezed heights both to our SW and NE - proper cold zonality at work.

Can't recall many months with similiar synoptics.

Looking at the synoptics for that month I'm surprised it didn't come in colder than 2.2c. Of course very cold for December in any sense of the imagination but surprisingly high.

Looking at the pressure patterns alone I would have guessed closer to 1.0c.
