sparkling and feeling mighty cold out there. The chickens refused to go far foragng today! don't blame them.

Is hoping we could see a wee bit more snow overnight - hopeful of a wee surprise tomorrow? (ever the optimist)

Evening all,

Spent an enjoyable day in snowy Glen Lochay, near Killin.

Went to the top of Beinn nan Oighreag (909m) We quickly climbed from slushy deposits on the roadside at about 150m into 'real' snow above about 250m. Surprisingly dry and powdery stuff not the sticky wet stuff I had expected lower down. Not as much snow as in the western highlands I believe, but still thigh-deep where it had drifted into hollows. Various moderate to heavy snow showers blew through, punctuated by bright spells with very clear air and superb views. The summit ridge/plateau above 800m was very wind-scoured and icy in places. Very cold - probably -4C or -5C but felt much much colder with a severe windchill. Water partially froze in my flask but luckily had a warm drink too! White hills as far as the eye could see. Even lower hills like the Campsies and Ochils have decent cover above around 300m. On the way up, wet snow started at Callander with drier snow after about Strathyre, coming down quite heavily driving through Glen Ogle.

All in all a classic Scottish winter hill day!

Will post some photos to whet the appetite for some lowland snow as soon as I work out how, since my camera seems to create huge files which are unpostable.

The Convective index is currently at a low ebb for mainland Scotland http://expertcharts.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/2011/12/04/basis18/ukuk/koin/11120421_0418.gif

It's forecast to pick up later in the night http://expertcharts.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/2011/12/04/basis18/ukuk/koin/11120500_0418.gif

http://expertcharts.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/2011/12/04/basis18/ukuk/koin/11120503_0418.gif

So although the situation looks fairly poor for eastern or even central areas at the moment, it should pick up as the night goes on.

Well BBC Scotland's forecast has just said snow for the higher ground tomorrow and a high of 3 here. 1 minute later the national BBC forecast had snow for low ground in Scotland (most in the NW) and a high of 0°C here!?

The BBC Scotland forecasts baffle me a times!

I follow a forecaster on fb called "Windy wilson" he's always pretty flammin accurate for the weather, anyway he said over 2 weeks ago that he predicted the 4th Dec as a snow day for many parts of Scotland, pretty bang on I'd say, in fact I'm always pretty impressed with his accuracy, anyway he's just posted this

ADVISORY - Windy says Greenock, Helensburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Denny, Falkirk, Alloa, Dunblane, some parts of Fife, Livingston, Broxburn, Edinburgh and through to Dunbar (and surround areas) - expect some kind of 'snow' very soon, and over the next few hours . . . . . .

He's also being interviewed by daybreak tomorrow morning, :D (He's from aucterarder.

He didn't say snow day, he said we would see snow on the 4th, that's what i meant lol. Need my bed.

Okay so the snow is starting to get lighter but what's to come? We might end up getting some of the stuff over Cowal but the precipitation out in the sea and over Islay, Jura, Coll and Tiree is looking very promising. The question is how much snow will we get.

satrep says it's a 'comma cloud'. I remember those sometimes delivering snow I think but no circulation associated with it, just a big cloud bank.
