Upper temperatures and surface temperatures have been the same across Manchester and Cheshire today, so I'm wondering if there's been a warm sector mid-way between 850hPa and ground level flirting with Cheshire, but Manchester was out of its boundaries?

Oh well, I'll ask in the MOD.

i was thinking the same thing..something very strange as gone on today, where we should have had the snow ended up as freezing rain / with snow trying to come down..def no sleet, def no regular rain..just freezing rain all afternoon after snow this morning for 5 mins as powder.

A537 Cat And Fiddle closed, A57 Snake Pass, now closed both ways. Numerous reports locally and in/around Manchester of hazardous driving conditions simply because of the freezing rain on the roads and the fact the low ground temps have endered any of the usual grit next to useless because it just freezes upon contact with the surface.

Snowing heavier now, shame this front was not later in day as getting deeper now.

Congleton Road A54 now closed, Snake Pass just passable with care at this time.

A537 Cat And Fiddle closed too, not sure if you mentioned that one?

Edit just seen you beat me to it haha

Off the top of my head, 5th I think (Sunday night I know that as I was in 6th form the next day), might be wrong though, Came at the end of the cold spell that year. Warmed up quite alot afterwards as it had mostly melted come the afternoon of the next day.

Right, i was in salford then and got nothing and nothing the previous sunday, gutting that one was on a personal level.

Trying it's damn hardest to snow here, but it isn't enough.

First time I've experienced freezing rain today, and hopefully the last, it's bloody horrible.

Lol Martin, well as guvnor22002 was pointing out more than likely transpennine routes will start shutting off one by one into the evening, as they already are doing. Only the major routes like the A6 will remain open but with added knock-on effects so anyone travelling through the area reading this I would advise to make sure the car is filled up with fuel, plenty of blankets, shovel (just incase) food, and essentials.

Help is a long way when you are on iced up roads in traffic queues for miles, along trunk roads that can go from winding country towns one minute to open moorland the next.
