Whatever it is, sounds like it was focused in the West Midlands judging by people saying they felt it shake the house, seemed to be little more than a thud for me.

On the bbc news homepage the little red breaking news banner that pops up now and again say the ministry of defence are looking into reports of a big bang in oxfordshire.

Maybe an extra powerful lightning bolt? laugh.png

I do know that positive bolts originating from high up in cumulonimbus clouds are more powerful with louder bangs than normal, though if it was across as wide a area as suggested then I doubt it was that, also not sure if a storm was near that area

Quite possibly, http://earthquake.us...gion/Europe.php

Nothing in reference to anything geological. I don't understand how it could be anyway.

Either that or the Military playing up again biggrin.png The fact that BBC have reported "The Ministry of Defence is investigating reports of a loud bang that has been heard across a large part of England."

Is my suspect, but aint these guys also our NASA?

Sky news says minor earth tremor....

7:01pm UK, Thursday April 12, 2012

A loud bang heard in the Coventry area is being blamed on a minor earth tremor by police in the West Midlands.

It can't have been an earthquake, I remember the one we had a few years ago and that was all 'felt' through the flloor, but this was just like a blast wave and it came from the sky seemingly?

British Geological Survey told Sky News it had no seismic records to indicate a tremor had struck.

Rumours abound about the cause - this from @bunkeralpha on twitter who knows his stuff:

@netweather Was a sonic boom from an RAF Typhoon which was scrambled on a QRA launch from Coningsby

Ahhh good stuff, would have done my head in if I'd not have found out.

But how could it have been heard over 100's of square miles?

MOD have confirmed it was a SONIC BOOM.

Apparently there was a false security alert and thus Two fighter Jets were sent. Thats whats on BBC Cov & Warks now.

Not sure if you remember, but when Concorde used to fly it used to route mid Bristol Channel to a waypoint called UPGAS where it used to accelrate to supersonic speeds, apparently this used to be heard by many from many miles away. Someone that's lived in that area may be able to explain.

If it was indeed the MOD, then the RAF euro-fighter can easily break the sound barrier, if there was two of them then I am not surprised it was heard over many locations.

I heard it too, lasted about 15 secs, and not the usual commercial jet sound either. Was obviously the Typhoon!

As Paul states it was a RAF Typhoon on a Quick Reaction Alert sortie, I suspect the pilot did it by accident as they are not supposed to break the sound barrier over land, they were reacting to a signal from a Helicopter
