11.8c

Slightly above average, my reasoning, the below average start, evened out by a milder 2nd half to the month. Perhaps meaning a milder month than I am suggesting but I am not risking it too much by going too high.

CET will drop like a stone in the coming days with some very low means for the time of year thanks to widespread cold minima in the coming three nights and very low maxima - widely below 10 degrees in the CET zone. A slow recovery is possible by the end of next week, but I suspect the CET will be languishing below the 9 degree mark as head into the middle part of the month. Plenty of time for a pick up still and we have seen contrasting halves to May in some years such as 2008. Last May started off on a very warm note but unusually became progressively cooler as it wore on, likewise 2008, its rare for the first half of May to be appreciably warmer than the second half. By late May, early summer heatwaves can easily occur, 2009 being the last occasion, 2005 being another case. The very cold May of 1996 saw a major warm up at the tail end introducing a very good June.
