Steady snow has fallen here since around 2pm with some large flakes falling though little settled. The last few hours have seen much finer snow which has started to settle though it is beginning to ease now.Probably around 8 inches here but with few drifts to note as yet.Winds slowly easing.

Overcast with light snow beginning at around 0500 which left a thin but full cover by 0900. This continued into the morning before dying out and slowly thawing during the afternoon. Very cold for late-March but well short of the low maximum here since records began in 1980.

Max Temp: 2.3C

Min Temp: 0.0C

Mean Wind: 16mph E

Max Gust: 29mph

Low Windchill: -5.4C

0.5cm snowcover at 0900 (none in rain gauge as it was horizontal!)

Currently overcast but dry with a temp of 1.2C.

The snow from the gauge has finally melted. The rain gauge was completely buried but the snow I salvaged yielded 14.0 mm giving a 24 hr total of 17.9 mm

The rainfall equivalent of two snow cores taken from an undrifted area of average depth yielded an average of 24.1 mm.

Moderate snow again here at the moment and the temperature has fallen to -2.2c.

Dedication!!

Yes I agree Tony, TM really does put some time and effort into his daily recordings they are a pleasure to read. It will be interesting what snowfall totals we get surly it surpasses winter 09/10 in a 24hr period..?

Has eased to only light snow now here with temps falling.

Temp -3.1c

Dp -3.7c

Wind Chill -5.8c

Dedication!!

LOL. I do strive for accuracy!

Rainfall from melted snow in the gauge from 0900 to 1800 was 3.2cm.

Mean amount from two snow cores of fresh snow falling from 0900 was 6.1mm; this figure ties in quite nicely with the amount on the rainfall radar accumulation.

It does illustrate how much is lost from gauges in blizzard conditions and how great the under-recording must have been from monthly gauges in remote moorland locations in years gone by.

The snow has stopped here after a little over 48 hours of continuous snowfall. 1.5cm of fresh snow has fallen since 1800 which would theoretically take the mean depth to 42.5cm although it never works quite like that as there is always some compaction due to settling of the snow pack. I would think the maximum mean depth here for this event was 42cm.

Thanks P.M.

You're right, this event has exceeded the amount recorded in Nov/Dec 2010. Although the overall depth was greater then, peaking at 49cm on Dec' 1st, the single fall of 36cm came on top of an earlier fall which was still lying.

For one single event this is the largest single snowfall here since that of late April 1981 which recorded a mean depth of 59cm after almost 72 hours of continuous snow.
