No stats, although I estimate the cloud base to be about 1ft higher than in Eastbourne. Its very cold with very light snow flurries after being wet and windy overnightsmile.png

A major task to do all the readings this morning. All thermometers not in a screen, and all the rain gauges, completely buried.

Both screens filled with blown snow and impossible to find anywhere with undrifted snow.

The middle of the fields on the tops are scoured down to about 5cm of snow with drifts around the edges limited only by the height of the walls, which in this area are about 1.5m high. Some drifts over 2m deep where the walls are higher.

At 0900;

Temp; -1.9c

24 hr max; -0.5c

24 hr min; -2.0c

Grass min; -1.1c ( thermometer buried)

Rainfall in 24 hrs ending 0900; waiting for snow from gauges and several snow cores to melt )

Mean wind speed; 24 mph E

8 oktas Ns

Continuous light-moderate snow with drifting.

Vis; between 400 and 800 m

Mean depth of snow away from obvious drifts; 36 cm

Indeed. The wind direction means that the snow is going to accumulate in the hollows which catch plenty of sun, but I wonder how long snow patches could last all the same.

Yes, juding by what it was like on the tops this morning I would think the western side of the Moor must have drifts well over 2m deep by now.

Still snowing steadily here and still drifting. Temp' is -1.8c. About 6cm of fresh snow since 0800 when I cleared the yard.

The snow from the gauge has finally melted. The rain gauge was completely buried but the snow I salvaged yielded 14.0 mm giving a 24 hr total of 17.9 mm

The rainfall equivalent of two snow cores taken from an undrifted area of average depth yielded an average of 24.1 mm.

Moderate snow again here at the moment and the temperature has fallen to -2.2c.

Incredibly cold day considering there's been no heavy rain/snow to lower temps, just cloud and a strong wind straight off the sea. High today 0.8C with a low of 0.3c, which for the end of March in my location is unbelievable. I think average temps now should be 9/10c? Actually, my thermometer maybe reads too high as it currently shows 0.6 but icicles are starting to form on the overflow pipe! Making it even more remarkable is the fact that there is no snow cover to lower the temp.

Overcast with light wet snow - our first of this cold spell - turning to sleet and dying out by early afternoon. Just about enough on the grass at 9am to count as a day of lying snow, but nearly all gone by late afternoon. Exceptionally cold for late March. Maximum 1.8, minimum 0.5. Wind moderate ENE.

Continuous light-moderate snow and drifting all day and as far as I can tell about another 8 or 9cm of fresh snow since 0900.

Very difficult to obtain accurate measurements of the snow as there are deep drifts everywhere, the depth limited only by the height of the walls. Many drifts over 1.5m deep and extending 20 to 50 metres from the walls into the fields, albeit with the depth tapering off.

The mean depth of lying snow, away from obvious drifts, is now 41 cm which is the deepest I've measured in March though still not up to the level of late April 1981.

At 1800;

Temp; -2.6c

Max' today; -1.6c ( second consecutive ice day unprecedented at this time of year in the last 40 years; possibly equalled on March 22nd and 23rd 1969 when my records were at a site 150 m lower )

Min' last night; -2.0c

Grass ( snow ) min; -1.1c ( thermometer buried )

Rainfall from 0900-1800 ( waiting for snow from gauge and snow core to melt )

Sunshine today; 0.00 hrs

Mean wind speed; 20 mph NE

Highest gust today; 45 mph E at 1332

8 oktas Ns and St

Continuous moderate snow with drifting

Vis; between 800 m and 3 km depending on the amount of blowing snow.

Mean depth of lying snow; 41 cm
