Hardly been in this thread so far this winter - the regional threads tend to only come alive under cold and especially snowy spells - so they will remain quiet for some time yet, but looking forward to them coming alive again hopefully..

Oh dear 2014 looks like it is going to start on yet another miserable dull wet note, just like 2012 and 2013 where we managed zero sunshine in the first 10 days.. making for a very depressing feel all around.

Who couldn't do with some cold frosty sunny days right now. I remember the sudden change to colder sunny dry weather on and around the 13th January 2012, it really raised everyone's spirits after a very dull wet period.

Yes once again we are left wondering what all the media fuss is about, with a relatively pleasant (for January) day.6C with good sunny spells. Gusts to 40mph, no big deal.

What you've got to remember is that if a storm hits the south east/south west it's a "uk wide superstorm" whereas if gale force winds hit the entirety of Scotland and most of northern england (say down to York) it'll be mentioned in passing as a bit breezier than normal in northern areas by national weather forecasts.

Snow warning out from the met office for Durham and Northumberland during tomorrow

Issued at: 1158 on Fri 3 Jan 2014

Valid from: 1100 on Sat 4 Jan 2014

Valid to: 2200 on Sat 4 Jan 2014

Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow will develop during Saturday before clearing during the evening. The snow will be mainly confined to higher ground above about 150 metres where accumulations of several centimetres are possible. There may be temporary slight slushy deposits at lower levels in any heavier precipitation. The situation is finely-balanced and there remains considerable uncertainty regarding the extent of any snow. Hence the public should watch for further updates to this warning. The public should be aware of possible travel disruption.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A complex depression is likely to run northeastwards across the UK on Saturday. As the associated frontal system encounters colder air across northern Britain, the rain is likely to turn to snow at least on higher routes. Any heavy precipitation could bring wet snow down to lower levels. Computer models are still giving differing indications regarding the location of the main snow risk hence there is greater than usual uncertainty over these developments. Therefore the public should keep up to date with the latest forecasts.

Yes many places could be about to see a surprise snowfall - it will be very much a 'nowcasting' situation, much of Cumbria and NE England as well as southern Scotland will be under sub 528 dam air tomorrow and into sunday, evaporative cooling is key. Places with modest heights could see at least temporary cover especially under heavy precipitation.

It is a fineline situation, many similar set ups have delivered snow down to very low levels.

Looking at the radar I can't see much rain hitting the region now it looks like we're too far north today, the snow warning so far is looking like it won't be needed

The snow warning for Durham and Northumberland remains in place till 20:00 but with no precipitation in sight they may as well remove it

A nice sunny morning has got replaced with cloud and rain, things should settled down quite nicely for the rest of the week with sunshine becoming dominant with little rainfall

Indeed Saturday night into Sunday is currently showing subzero that hasn't happened much this winter (extended autumn)

The latest met office update is good for coldies in this region (about the only place in the UK which it is good for coldies)

Through the week it may become cold in the northeast, with strong easterly winds and wintry showers.

However after one extremely watered down cold snap at the start of December 2013 I would urge extreme caution until this becomes closer to reality

Remember the last one?

On the Sunday 1st December this was the picture
