We seem to be in a run of fairly wet May's here in Darlington at the moment

May's of 2008 to 2011saw just 80mm fall for the 4 combined

But since 2012 May has turned out quite wet with 128mm falling in May 2012 and 2013 combined and 69mm has fallen this May with today's rain to add onto that so quite possibly 200m for the 3 combined

The wettest May by far in 10 years at my Davis site (currently 76.6mm) but way away from the RAF Finningley record of 159.3mm in 1983 with 55.9mm in one 24 h period on 18-19th. So with 76.6mm and add 25% for a more general value for the area there are only perhaps 3 occasions in 72 years with higher values, so a wet month by any May standard?

It will be interesting to read what the other 2 sites have recorded when the COL report for May comes out.

Going to be very close to 2nd place by the end of the day. I'm guessing we're on 139.x mm for the month by now.

The day ended bringing a the total up to 139.5mm a total of 7.5mm of drizzle yesterday. So that's 495mm for the year.

Currently 124mm here, 129% of average. Still need 5mm to make the Spring average despite the fairly wet April and May due to the dry March. 1,151mm for the year which is an exceptional 158% above average.

That's the end of May and Spring.

May total: 124mm, 131% of average.

Spring total: 335mm, 99% of average

Year to date: 1,151mm, 158% of average.

Cumulative rainfall shows how wet this year has started, could not have a drop until late September and still be above average.

Break down of the averages here http://www.sheffieldweather.co.uk/Averages/Average14.htm

Third wettest May we've recorded and a complete lack of storms bar one distant one. We bred em for everybody else.

UK actual and anomaly rainfall for May from the Met Office

Posted Image  Posted Image

Above average virtually everywhere, exceptionally so in the E and NE. Wettest in Wales and W Scotland.

Hmm has me well in the 150mm area although recorded only 124mm. Was having problems with old raingauge, now replaced, earlier in the month so might have under recorded.

143.9 mm here in May, 208% of the 1981-2010 average and the 5th wettest May in the last 50 years.

An unprecedented statistic in the 50 years I've kept records is that the accumulated rainfall total at the end of each of the first five months of this year has been the highest on record.

Only one other year has managed to produce more than a single occasion with a record total and that was 2007 which currently holds the record for the January to June, July and August periods.

This June would need 89.6 mm of rain to break the 2007 January to June record. The June 30 year average here is 81.7 mm.

And with today's rain Sheffield has already gone above the driest year on record which was 521.2mm back in 1975-Can you think of an earlier point in the year where we've beaten that total The PIT cos i can't.

It turned out to be the wettest May since 2000 here with 102.0mm, 221% of the 1981-2010 average.

The Spring total was 170.2mm, which is 119% of average.

It has been quite unusual in recent years to get a warm and very wet spring. The last was 1999, which was also coincidentally the last year to have the first 5 months more than 1C above average.

57.0 mm here in June, 70% of the 30 year average and the second driest month of the year so far.

The total for the first 6 months is  662.0 mm, 32.5 mm less than 2007 which still holds the record as the wettest first six months.

June finished with 49mm this month being dry as well. Now topping the ponds up as they've really dropped in warm dry sunny weather. Haven't done that very often in the last few years.
