I've seen zero rainfall so far this month, can't remember another September like it! Everywhere is like a dust bowl and the streams have all dried up!

2.4 mm here so far this month so still on course to become the driest month of any since my records began just over 50 years ago.

That record is held by September 1986 with 8.2 mm.

3.0 mm overnight taking the month's total to 5.4mm. The September 1986 record could still fall although light rain and drizzle is forecast for this area tomorrow.

Very dry month here. Probably the driest since March 2012 or March-April 2011.

Yes, it'll almost certainly be the driest September, and the driest calendar month, here since September 1959.

We're on 5.5 mm at present and little or no rain forecast before the end of the month. September 1959 was a few years before I began to keep records but other local stations recorded between 0.5mm and 2.3 mm that month.

I'm surprised September 1986 isn't in the top ten list, other areas must have received much more rain than here that month to take the England/Wales average above 24.3 mm.

Exceptionally dry here in September 1986 TM, a station nearby recording just 11mm which may well have been drier than 1959 when hereabouts, according to the maps in British Rainfall, approx 15% fell ( c17mm) although with no actual monthly amount breakdowns provided.

Just had a look in the 1959 volume of British Rainfall, Tony. I'm not sure how far from you these places are but the following totals are reported for September of that year.

Aberporth   8.9 mm

Aberystwyth  13.2 mm

Swyddffynnon ( Crug-las )  7.6 mm

Pembroke  9.1 mm

Haverfordwest   6.4 mm

Maenclochog ( Ddolwen Bridge ) 10.4 mm

Hi TM some are within 20 miles just thanks, but no full breakdowns given, and with the % map wetter than 1986.

Looked in 'Monthly and annual totals..1986' and the E&W figure is 26mm so not quite making Mr Data's list!

Its been notably dry in the Lake District. Up until Tuesday, many parts had only seen a light drizzle, recent days have seen light rain off and on, but not very much.

However, its been a wet year so far, not exceptionally so.. August was wet in these parts.

Indeed the east and especially SE less dry in Sept 1986, very dry for the north and west.

This evening's forecast on the BBC would indicate that the driest September since 1959 is by no means a done deal here.

A chance of heavy, perhaps thundery, showers tomorrow afternoon and evening; one of those could change things completely.

After 2.5 mm from showers yesterday evening, September 2014 is now at 8.0 mm and is  only 0.2 mm from equalling the total in Sept' 1986.

Yes it all changed here last night TM, 9.7mm from a thunderstorm, so not one for the record books here, more detail in today's reports.

Still could be the driest September on record (from what I can find) in the local area, currently 8.8mm (driest from a nearby site 11mm Sept 1986). However depends on what that patch of light rain to the SW decides to do later today!
