I bet a lot of people have done that tonight, but wont admit it, here i go, my name is Jo and i stick my head out of the back door to see how windy it is, thank you, i shall sit down now :p

I wish my liking & interest for cold and snow matched my liking & interest for windy weather!

With my only real weather turn ons being snow and heat, you can imagine one gets very frustrated living in the UK

I personally view storm naming as being an improvement, not necessarily for those who use weather forums, but it certainly allows a distinction between storms, especially when they've been as regular and damaging as they have been this winter (Maybe not damaging this south, but certainly further north).

I think it has definitely helped improve awareness of these storms amongst the general public, who normally don't pay too much attention. In this social media age, naming storms makes it a lot easier for organisations, emergency services, transport companies etc to not only get information out using hashtags such as #StormImogen, but again, allow people to access information about storms more easily, and generally improve awareness.

Valentines day 2014 brought us those wind speeds too

I can only speak from a Londoners point of view being quite sheltered.

Pub run shows max gusts around lunchtime tomorrow along north of M4 corridor and Thames Estuary. Lots to change as low won't track as predicted: by global standards 50 miles north or south is nothing, but by UK standards it's a big deal. Here's the chart, and also don't forget this isn't high resolution so factors such as roughness length aren't really considered:

Insane rain here and very gusty winds radar is looking nasty

Yes an organised band of very heavy rain stretching from Andover to Maidenhead moving ENE,  squally winds also.

Very gusty down here in Tunbridge Wells.  Glad my two early lambs are not newborns.

I've lived here at the highest point in Brighton for 18 months now and never known constant wind strengths like this.

Also upgrades for coldies on the pub run!!

Fair play to the met office who had hail symbols over London at 22.00 as far back as Thursday afternoon.

That squall just went through here, absolutely insane weather.. Was not expecting that tonight

That was mad! Heard the rain getting heavier so hung out of a window watching it. Then the squall hit and it looked like a tornado passing. Still chucking it down.

INSANE!!  Squall just passed through.  I'm not joking when I say I've only seen something similar in crazy storm films.

Are there sites that show max recorded wind speeds around the area?

Thanks,

Mal
