In case no one has posted it this is a great Web came to watch on. They also do one for Port Miami and Lauder Dale.

Just looked up Port Nassau/New providence island on google earth. The entire island is low lying (<30m) so this is going to be very bad.

Not surprised that recon found 941mb. They also found a few measurements at around that level so a drop below 940mb and the lowest ever pressure that Matthew has reached yet will probably be found in the next few hrs.

Radar shows some strong eye walls and other outer bands.

The quick response to 130kt flight winds would indicate that further increases to 140-150kts looks to be on the cards.

Latet nhc path shows the centre just just offshore with the eye wall reaching probably 2-3 miles onshore. Leading to a lot of damage to coastal areas.

Looked at the Port Nassau webcam a little while ago, and although it's dark 'wild looking' would be a massive understatement. I wonder how long it'll keep streaming pictures?

The fact they have power/comms is good sign.  I'm assuming the eye will be passing between Andros and New providence islands in the next 2-3 hours.  Grand Bahama will then be next to get a battering.

Power has just gone in Nassau.  Web cam is still broadcasting, probably emergency power/generator in the hotel it is located.

Edit - And now the power is back, suspect there will be lots of outages.

Wow, went to bed and the last recon pass had found stable pressure.. 11 hours later and we have 939mb.

These are Wilma levels of pressure dropping, Florida will have serious problems should the winds respond.

To confirm, it's dropped a little over 20mb in 11 hours.

On top of the pressure drop winds (those reported by recon) actually went from 110mph to 125mph over the past 12 hours so the current rate of intensification may suggest a 920mb, 140mph hurricane by end of day. Solid cat 4 hit to come for Florida.

NOAA forecast for Stuart, Florida shows sustained winds above 100mph with gusts up to 140mph.

Eye about to pass over Nassau.

Florida landfall looks to be around the Daytona Beach area, here is the local news outlet for that area, might be useful for on the spot updates as he approaches...

This part of Florida is very low lying so major storm surge issues I would have thought.

What kind of storm surge we talking ?

The Bahamas had estimated storm surges of 10 to 15 feet near the storm centre. If the storm deepens and given that the water has no where to go as it's driven into the Florida coastline I would estimate 15 -20 feet, but the experts may be able to answer that one

Been Waiting for some daylight on Matthew. It's just breaking on Matthew and reinforces the Doppler we can see. Some very high towers coming up on the eye wall which is probably why the eye is currently cloudy. I.e. The instability is such that the intensification is still very much ongoing. A cat 5 is still a possibility, that's only 140kts and we are already at 115kts.

Storm surge is much more driven by storm size and wind radai so it won't be too bad for most unless your within ~100 miles of the center.
