Snow warnings now out for later this week so a good time to start the January thread

Issued at: 10:53 on Mon 9 Jan 2017

Valid from: 18:00 on Wed 11 Jan 2017

Valid to: 12:00 on Thu 12 Jan 2017

Snow showers are expected to develop from Wednesday evening lasting into Thursday. These, combined with strong winds, could lead to locally very poor travel conditions. Be aware of the potential for disruption to transport due to lying and blowing snow.

Cold air originating over Arctic Canada will affect the area from Wednesday evening through Thursday, bringing snow showers and strong winds. Wind gusts up to 55 mph are expected in exposed coastal areas and on hills in association with snow showers, leading to temporary blizzard conditions. As well as reduced visibility, 2-5 cm of snow could accumulate anywhere within the warning area, with 10-20 cm possible above 300 m. Lightning may accompany the heaviest showers, with potential disruption to power supplies as a consequence.

Snow warnings updated

Issued at: 11:19 on Tue 10 Jan 2017

Valid from: 00:05 on Thu 12 Jan 2017

Valid to: 23:55 on Thu 12 Jan 2017

Strong winds, gusting up to around 60 mph in places, will continue to drive heavy, squally wintry showers across much of Scotland on Thursday. Many of the showers will fall as snow away from western coasts, with ice, hail and lightning posing additional hazards. 10-20 cm of snow may accumulate over some higher ground during the day, with drifting and blizzard conditions at times. Several cm of snow may affect some lower-lying areas. Road and rail services may be affected with delays and cancellations possible. Expect longer journey times.

The stream of very cold air will continue to affect much of Britain, bringing a mixture of hazards. Amounts of snow will be very variable, and snow could turn back to sleet or rain for a time during the day in some areas.

Issued at: 12:05 on Tue 10 Jan 2017

Valid from: 00:05 on Thu 12 Jan 2017

Valid to: 23:55 on Thu 12 Jan 2017

Northwesterly winds will bring occasional snow showers throughout Thursday, though these may clear from southern parts of Wales for a time. There is the potential for disruption to transport networks with longer journey times. Icy stretches on roads and pavements are also possible.

A cold northwesterly airstream will be in place throughout Thursday bringing occasional snow showers. Around 2 cm of snow is possible even to low levels in places. 5-10 cm is possible on high ground above about 200 m.

Sleet turned to wet snow just after 3:30pm. Been snowing lightly to moderate for last hour, just starting to settle on grass and some cars as temp gets closer to freezing.
