Thought you might be first to get anything from it looking at where it is.

My dad's just come in and said he could see distant flashes to the south west of here.

I noticed some intense downpours showing up on the hi-res models last night, but didn't expect anything to materialise. It has been looking ominous all day, akin to a plume destabilizing in the Summer. A nice treat indeed!

Much further West then forecast, TV had those showers hitting Kent from this evening and through tomorrow. Will they move over to here still?

Obviously not as warm as a summer plume but the air has that mild humid feel to it.

Seeing some new strikes showing up around Portsmouth way now. Pretty active down on that South Coast tonight!

The app that I am using is also showing a strike near Southend Airport, but I am 99.9% sure that is a false return

Edit: Actually, I'm not sure it is a false return, someone on Twitter reporting thunder in Southend. Probably just out of earshot for me though

Yep, quite an active cold front coming through, just been hit by a blob of heavy rain here near Heathrow ahead of the main convective rain band which is producing the odd sferic.

Can see the occasional flash from the cell out in the channel, I don't think it's quite worth heading down to the coast to watch. A nice start to the year though!

The shower moving out of London is moving directly due north towards Luton whilst the line of showers from Coventry to W London is moving NE. An active night for early March.

Very nice early start! Anything this side of the equinox is quite remarkable, even if it is the odd rogue steric!

That's annoying, I thought (and hoped!) they'd be moving East. But, it's only March, still got all of summer yet!

Thought it was an ambulance or police car passing down our street and then a huge and impressive peel of thunder broke out - we both jumped up and ran to the window!

Strike was somewhere around chiddingfold I think - about 10 mins ago.

Wow! Roll on 2017 storm season :D

Day 2 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Sun 05 Mar 2017 - 05:59 UTC Mon 06 Mar 2017

ISSUED 20:39 UTC Sat 04 Mar 2017

ISSUED BY: Chris

An area of low pressure will cross central Britain through Sunday and unstable air to the south of low could help to trigger some heavy showers and a few thunderstorms, especially across southwest and south central England. There will be decreasing DLS in the wake of the low pressure passing by, however LLS along with coastal convergence could help generate a few funnels or weak tornadoes, especially along the south-central coast of England during the mid to late afternoon.

Might be a few rumbles, hail and gusty winds from the showers across southern EIRE, S Wales and S England this afternoon. Storm forecast issued:

CONVECTIVE / THUNDERSTORM OUTLOOK - SUNDAY 5TH MARCH 2017

… EIRE, S WALES, S ENGLAND and E ANGLIA …

Upper troughing and associated colder mid-level temperatures will spread east off the Atlantic across the UK. Cold air aloft and diabatic warming warming of the moist surface airmass across southern UK, to south of surface low moving east, will create steep lapse rates – which will support scattered heavy showers and a few thunderstorms across EIRE, S Wales, S England and E Anglia this afternoon.

Modest deep layer shear of 20-40 knts and a few troughs in the westerly flow will organise showers/storms into bands. With drier air arriving in the mid to upper levels from the west, downward momentum of strong jet stream winds aloft will be enhanced in stronger convection which will have the potential to bring some locally strong wind gusts (50-60mph). Otherwise, showers/storms maybe accompanied by hail and may lead to localised flooding.

Kicking off over the channel with a few strong and very localised thunderstorms around St Malo. Looking forward to some hefty showers here this afternoon - forecast looks good for our area at least
