After a rather cold first part of December, first in the north and then in the Adriatic regions and now in the south, Christmas 2021 will be mild, as many times in the last two decades, with temperatures like in mid-March in the south.

After a rather cold first part of December but without exceptional events, an extremely mild phase begins today, worthy of the end of March, which will last a long time in Italy and in other countries and which recalls January 2007.
Merry Christmas to all users of this forum and their families! A hug

After a very mild and essentially spring period during the Christmas holidays, from tomorrow the temperatures will begin to drop, first in the north, then also in southern Italy. Waiting for the Italian figure for 2021 just finished, at the Collegio Romano (the central station of Rome) the year 2021 was among the hottest years but less hot than 1994,2000,2003,2014,2015,2018,2019, 2020, because it was similar to 2017.

In Italy a strongly anticyclonic phase is underway, after a few days of moderate cold, mostly in the Adriatic regions. In the next few days the climate will be very mild for the period in the hills and in the mountains.

In Italy, 2021 was the coolest year since 2013 but with notable differences between regions: in the north it was less hot, while in Sicily it is generally the hottest year ever, beating 2000 and 1994. In 2020 the opposite had happened, that is, the positive anomalies had been greater in northern Italy.

January 2022 should end in Italy with a slight positive anomaly, approximately + 0.3 ° / + 0.4 ° above the CLINO 81/10. However, it was a very anticyclonic month, fairly cold only in the Adriatic regions.

In these days the snow has also returned to the plains in the north but it is a short parenthesis. It is a mild February in Italy, it will certainly be among the top 10 mildest since 1946, perhaps among the top 5 mildest.

I imagine that it's due to the foehn winds up that way.

What have been the hottest periods in Italy since 1900?
If we consider the warm Mediterranean semester (1 May - 31 October), the hottest was that of 2003, followed by 2012 and 2019.
If, on the other hand, we consider the cold Mediterranean semester (1 November-30 April), the hottest was that of 2006/07, followed by 2019/20 and 2000/01.

Is there a correlation between a cold winter and a hot summer in Italy? Let's say that there is a weak correlation, if we look at the last decades: the winters 2002/03 and 2011/12, for example, had very cold periods in Italy and the following summers were exceptionally hot, especially in 2003, while the very mild winters 2013/14 and 2015/16 were followed by moderate and not excessively hot summers. But the winter 2001/02 was even colder but the summer 2002 was moderate and unstable in July and August, although very hot in June and a partially similar discourse applies to the cold winter 2004/05, followed by a summer not very different from that of 2002. Again, the very hot summer 2003 was followed from the winter of 2003/04 with six intense cold waves, but the summer of 2019, also very long and hot, was followed by a very mild winter, the 2019/20.
Therefore the correlation is very weak and has no scientific basis, indeed with global and local warming in progress it has further weakened.

What has been the trend of the Italian winter in recent decades?
The 10's were the ones with the mildest winters since 1900 and this happened after the 00's had seen a slight thermal countertrend, having been cooler in winter in my country than the 90's (this figure had been more evident in the north).
Since 2013/14, Italian winters have become much milder, even if they have had some episodes of very strong frost and also important but isolated and sporadic cold periods, such as February 2012 and January 2017 but there has been an increase in winter averages compared to the previous decade, which had had the winters from 2001/02 to 2005/06 quite cold and in thermal countertrend.
However, winter heating is slower and more moderate than in other seasons in Italy, while the greatest warming than in the past is in summer and autumn.

What winter does this 2021/22 look like in Italy?
We can consider it similar to 1987/88, with a very mild month (February in 2022, January in 1988), an almost normal month (January in 2022, February in 1988), a mild month but not one of the mildest (December both in 2021 than in 1987).
However, there are two differences: the winter 2021/22 was much drier and especially the winter 1987/88 was an almost exceptional case at that time, while today there are many winters with these characteristics of mildness in Italy (2015 / 16, 2019/20 but also 2013/14 and 2020/21, which were much more rainy).

Around 6/7 March we will have the definitive data for the winter 2021/22 in Italy ... certainly a mild winter but we will see in detail, even if we can say that the south was penalized more in December, the north was penalized more in January and February, especially it was one of the driest winters, only 1989/90 and 2015/16 were as dry as this in Italy, maybe 1983/84 but I'm not sure ...
February should close at around + 1.6 / + 1.8 on the 81/10 average in Italy, so it was very mild, even if a significant drop in temperature is expected from Saturday, after many days almost spring ...

The first 10 days of March 2022 were extremely cold in Italy, especially in the Adriatic regions: depending on the area, they were the coldest in March since 2005, 1996 or even 1987 ...

It has been a cold March in Italy so far. Even today the temperatures are below average, especially on the Adriatic side and in the south, even if they will rise significantly during the next week.
