Since 1875[almost 150 years] only 1922 and 1944 as well as 1965 had the hottest national day in May although 1947 was very close. September has had 10 such days.Interesting that 1890,1891,1895 and 1898 all had the hottest day of the year in September although the last time September had the hottest day was way back in 1962.

At Greenwich in 1862, the highest maximum of the year at that site was on the 6th of May with just 27.5°C

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't 2016 have it's hottest day in September?

Yes, 34.4C at Gravesend on 13th September was the highest of 2016.  July reached 33.5 and august 33.9 that year.

Before that, 13th September was apparently the earliest date in the autumn not to reach 90F anywhere in the UK.
