Yup, not even formed yet, wet stuff still crawling in from the Gulf of Mexico, but the massive heat sink setting up over central US to give record late August heatwave will swing this depression North as it forms over the Pacific East basin. It will enter California desert areas.....much needed rain, but as usual nowadays, too much, too fast so expect flash floods and cars with flashing headlights floating downstream.

Knowing Los Angeles track record, if I was a business owner, I would be ply boarding up my business now, just because any off kilter event in Los Angeles results in rioting and looting.

Cat 4 140mph at last NHC update. Was forecast but not sure that much so soon!

Still forecast to drop back to TS strength by landfall, but as above rainfall looks to be huge.

Hillary looking quite strong this morning.

Been quite a while since I saw an east Pacific hurricane / soon to weaken to a tropical storm travel this far north and impact south west USA. Some of the flooding could be quite horrific.

The Salton Sea basin is an area surrounding the lake, which is up to 69m BELOW sea level. Mostly farms but with a few towns, this area is at major risk of a complete disaster in the forthcoming rains.

LA and San Diego brace for first tropical storm to make landfall in 84 years on Sunday. No tropical storm has made landfall in Southern California since September 25, 1939

Hurricane Hilary grew rapidly to Category 4 strength off Mexico's Pacific coast, with it set to lash the south west of the US with heavy rain by the weekend.

The National Hurricane Center said Hilary's maximum sustained winds had risen to 140mph at midnight and was expected to intensify through Friday morning.

No tropical storm has made landfall in Southern California since September 25, 1939, according to the NWS. World War II had started just 24 days earlier.

Wow what a rare event this is. Has Florida moved over to the west coast? 😂

I think with 20 million plus people under the warning area, and the topography, we are looking at a disaster in the making.

This may finally be the event that wakes up the USA public to climate change...

Shame they dont read Netweather.

Incredible the amount of dynamics developing within short periods at the mo. I'll discuss what has occurred since my previous post and the timescale of this weekend through the beginning part of next week which really has all the ingredients of becoming a set of weather pattern evolutions which we will all be referring in memories with kids + grandchildren

This perfectly encapsulates the dynamics in this setup we've got a huge amount of intriguing dynamical situations playing their hand into this scenario which will in all likelihood become reference for historical meteorology evolutions.

We know the main contribution to this is the process linking into MJO phases 7 & 8 as I've covered however taking a deeper look to the various meteorological factors certainly an eyebrow raiser and something I've always maintained which often is noticeable how there are VERY few if any situations in meteorology which can be assumed as "coincidence" what am I referring to in this particular evolution?

The Jet contains many many separate Streaks, whilst looking into how our setup will pan out my attention immediately drew toward Hawaii

gem-ens-uv200-cpac-fh-60-60.gif

The odds of a streak randomly originating at the area of a historical wildfire

What's the importance of said Hawaii'n streak into our upcoming dynamics?

As the streak approaches the California coast it takes on a similar structure to that of RWB - Rossby Wave Breaking

gem-ens-uv250-wus-fh12-108.gif

The orientation becoming Southerly is a huge part of the direction Hurricane Hilary will follow

🔮👀😄

The hints were always there that something historical could emerge which is indeed coming into reality

I expect the biggest severe conditions will connect to the 🌧🌧🌧🌧 aspects, massive area being EXTREMELY impacted from Baja California extends up through the Snake River

gem-ens-apcpn24-wus-fh30-120.gif gem-ens-apcpn-wus-fh24-132.gif

For the significant impacted area getting severe wind damage this is the area I'm most concerned about

Screenshot-20230818-212443-Maps.jpg

eps-mslp-uv850-epac-fh24-54.gif

Also a concerning look on the Wave height with storm surge a real threat especially on the most western tips of Baja

ecmwf-wavehgt-epac-fh30-57.gif

To put into perspective the historical meteorology it's basically unprecedented since 1949 and only 5 storms have made the treck into California with only 2 maintaining tropical features judging by these stats

The intensifying rates are plain crazy to put it simply

kim-kardashian-shocked.gif

Not much more I can do to explain the unique nature with this event

Not sure if anyone here has friends relatives within these areas I've mentioned but really could be a literal life saver to suggest they get outwith until Hilary moves offshore afterward.

This tweet fits excellent with my discussion above, certainly one of the most 🤨🤯 meteorological situations I've watched in my 14 plus years of observations.
