Yes ,Dementia has destroyed my Mum, but even then we still can make a joke about things to keep it light hearted. ...☺

Sorry about your mum... I can't imagine what you must be going through and a tree being vandalised doesn't even come close. Maybe I am being oversensitive.

Considering how windy it was felling a tree in full leaf

was a serious game of chance a widow maker or barber chair could have killed him

You lot are so disrespectful. I hope nobody destroys something precious where you all live, maybe you wouldn't be so quick to take the mick.

Agree'd and it's already happened here with mass influx of tourists over the summer months, places such as Dove Dale, 3 Shires Head, Great Ridge, etc have experienced wildfires, littering, vandalism, verbal/physical abuse towards locals, from outsiders who don't give a rats about the fragility of the Peak District but simply want to show off the popular locations for their 'instaglam' or 'thick tok' followers.

Sycamore Gap tree wasn't just A tree but it was the Sycamore Gap tree, for some it doesn't mean much but for others it was a symbol. No-one has the right to make that decision for anyone else and to have had it cut down for what-ever purpose was intended.

Was thinking similar, how did 'one' 16 year old fell a big tree like that on a bloody windy night 🤔

Am leaving this now. I always thought people were pretty cool on this forum. Bitterly disappointed tonight.

Unfortunately there will always be these types of people, ignore them.

I've spoken to a lot of folk today and everyone is devastated at what has happened. Real folk, not keyboard warriors.

Noticed that, a good distance from the stump, all looks a bit odd? 🤔

Kids killing kids, kids vandalising, a little joke is fine maybe it’s a way to numb ourselves to the symbolism of it all, of the state of society right now but I for one really sad the way society seems to be going. I just don’t understand why people do this.

Just do no harm, be kind and contribute positively to society, I honestly don’t understand the motive here

An admirable sentiment, BUT unfortunately there are alot of undesirables out there whom don't agree and seek joy in pointless destruction and vandalism, sad state of affairs.

Maybe they’ve always existed but I will never understand the callousness of people who do this, I wonder if the perpetrator will be named.

Joking aside, people can be horrible and doing this is completely wrong. Mankind has a lot to answer for and I can only understand how an iconic landmark destroyed by an idiotic person has upset so many. It’ll be payback day soon enough for these reckless thugs …..

That's why I doubt it was a sixteen year old, he either got very lucky, or it was someone who knows what they are doing, which the sixteen year old wouldn't.

Definiely a lot of theories and speculations over who and what was used, reading through some replies on sm. Although possible a 16 year old with enough experience could have done it with the equipment and strength.

A second person, in his 60s, has been arrested after the beloved Sycamore Gap tree was brutally chopped down, police revealed

Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Fenney-Menzies said: “I hope this second arrest demonstrates just how seriously we're taking this situation, and our ongoing commitment to find those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Yes this is sad news and i as a nature lover and also a bonsai grower/enthusiast this is damn right callous and disgraceful and i hope that there will be justice from this and this to me thinks that it was done deliberately to the famous tree

this three was shot in the film Robin hood prince of thieves as i read earlier today,...i didn't know that

the only good news that will come out of all this is that it is a Sycamore tree and it will grow back from the stump 100% and quite quickly too🙂

Kieran Chapman says he's "devastated" a sapling he planted near the much-loved felled tree has been removed.
