Thought i'd create this as it was mentioned on the convective thread earlier this morning. The mid December 2022 snow event brought some decent falls of snow to parts of the Cotswolds and patches of the West Midlands, before the following night the south east had a decent dumping, but impacted the M25 and other major roads. London saw some snowy scenes and a few localised spots had over 15cm.

Some highlights:

2 radar snapshots at the time:

And a few more photos / vids of the event with countless more posted on social media at the time.

This one shows perfectly how my location was in one of the sweet spots. NE London/SW Essex border.

My record for the day reads

‘Freezing cold, heavy showery snow 07.30-10.30 then flurries (2 to 3 inches)’ Calm, Max -0.5c

Warminster caught several back building showers that morning whereas just a mile or so out of town there was only a dusting or nothing ; this was only apparent 5 days later when driving out of town for the first time since the snow! At home there was still a decent compacted covering but so close to home green fields etc!

The timing of it being on a bitterly cold morning (-4.8c min the preceding night) plus at practically solar minimum allowed the snow to stick around for a week which had severe frosts ranging from -3.0c to -7.2c !

A slow thaw began on the 17th then it all got washed away on a soaking milder 18th!

I remember the 18th certainly, but not in a good way...

An interesting spell but sadly too short. However the winter overall was not too bad, as dry cold weather returned for the 2nd half of Jan and then Feb was very dry.

One of the better snow periods around here given the low lying nature of Gloucester.
Woke up on the morning of the 11th and it was snowing lightly with a thin covering and honestly expected it to fizzle out and then thaw through the day, so out we went for a walk up the local (small hill).

As we walked the snow continued to fall and got heavier and heavier. By time we were at the top of Chosen hill at 150m ASL there was around 6 -7 inches lying and even back home at 20m ASL there was a good 4 inches.

the snow fizzled out by evening and then the temperature dropped, setting the lying snow to the point that even with sunny days there was no thaw for a week before rain eventually moved in.

As I’ve posted a few times on other threads, this event was pretty damn good for my location. We hit the sweet spot on the NE London/Essex border with about 6 inches of snow on the evening of the 11th, the snow did not melt for about a week, which meant we had 7 days of crunchy, thick snow with lots of early winter sunshine. Daytime temperatures barely got above freezing all week. Made even better by the fact it was Christmas time so everything was festive.

Remember that event well. Started snowing in East Sussex round about 1pm on the 11th and carried on for about 4 hours. Will upload some pics later. Was only about 3 cm, but I'd take that. Plus the rest of the week it remained as temps were sharp! Mild muck returned soon after before mid Jan and Feb was drier. Overall just for that snow event, I'd take it as past the BOTE in 2018, we've only had 1 snow day essentially and that was Feb 2019. We missed out on the Feb 2021 snow event for being too far south! So for me that 6 day cold snap was fantastic given the recent barren spell 🙂

Should add this as well, one of the best videos from the spell of snow leading to disruption on a road at Leckhampton Hill. Cheltenham. Not having winter tyres is another issue which many seem to have commented.

M25 in Essex at a standstill during this event.
