An ice day yesterday as the snaw finally arrived here at lunchtime. 

Overnight low of -8.3°C and about an inch on the level.

Bright and brisk this morning: currently -4.1°C/-6°C.

I guess the model thread is not the place tae go with snaw pics if that front is totally missing the sooth ae England?

Couple of fresh cm's here yesterday evening / overnight.

METO insisting it's gonnae snaw here fae 16:00 through tae Friday morning. We'll see.

Not sure why but temperatures have just dropped from -8°C back to -10°C in the last 30 minutes. 
Daughter keeps shouting “nowd” at the window, need a good breakfast first before venturing out.

Biggest problem is school transport modern large busses are useless on snow and ice a bit like artic lorries. A case for  reopening  old  country schools which could all be reached by walking. Its just progress!!!

Just ventured out, only to end of the drive mind. Temperature has now dropped back down to -11°C. Looks like the Met Office station at the distillery recorded -14°C overnight. Makes sense as my station is closer to the River Truim and a bit lower down making for a colder reading.

Yet more snow overnight  probably 4cm, getting seriously deep in places now. Looks like further good dumping tonight with amber warning in place. Minimum -6.7C

Bench at the new hoose is in a partly covered area, so would not be reliable without calibration.

Breaking news just in, Blair Atholl was colder than Dalwhinnie with a low of -15.5°C.

-8 in Kelty when I left this morning at 7am. I’m now in Burntisland and it’s a tropical -2!

any chance of a shower blowing all the way down here later.... I would really like to see a couple of decent showers before the end of the spell but looks a forlorn hope..... 

warnings out for storm on Sunday already and looks like could be quite a nasty one.

I wonder if the met office are updating the weather warnings. Aberdeen City Council has tweeted about the city having an Amber warning.    Or more likely the CC have got it completely wrong.

Up to the dizzy heights of -1. When I checked my phone at half past 8 this morning we we're at -7 it might have been lower overnight not sure Side paths slidy as hell obviously after that burst of rain yesterday afternoon

You'd also need to ensure the teachers were employed locally too. I could be at my nearest high school in 5mins in the car but drive 35mins. I probably pass lots of the teachers from my nearest school driving the other way. Most schools close as the staff can't get in safely, roads inadequately ploughed and gritted etc, especially in rural areas.

I enquired through my local councillors a while back about whether the council could look at travel distance as a factor when employing teachers at individual schools, more from an emissions, work balance angle but also resilience in poor weather. The answer that came back was that they couldn't as they felt it would contravene employment law (no more detail given). Wouldn't even consider actively asking if teachers wanted to volunteer to 'swap'. There just no lateral thinking in the UK at all.

We had a late start this morning by at my school, which helped as I dropped my son at his school for a Prelim. His school minibus didn't attempt to get up past our house, road was white but not that bad. He's now walking home rather than hang about, but that's his choice. I suspect with the MetO forecast for tonight that there will still be lots of school closures around Aberdeenshire tomorrow.

Think we need to make the most of the cold spell as heehaw showing up in extended models for us at the moment. Seen a wee fluury this spell that's looking it for us lowlanders.

I suspect the schools would be more resilient if the council insisted that staff and contracted buses had snow rated tyres to get rural contracts in the first place. I drove a taxi as a student and the thought of driving professionally all year round in Aberdeenshire on summer tyres wouldn't have even entered my mind. 

It's not realistic to expect that every road will be kept black, regardless how thoroughly treated they are. 

In any case, I used to love snow days - I think I probably got more benefit from XC skiing, sledging and being towed around a field by a quad bike than I would have from a day in school!
