Im still not 100% on this snaw dor tonight.. just cant see it happening as all the precipitation just keeps dying out as it come onto land...

I think the wind is switching to more of a northerly.  I think it could be quite a snowy evening here.

Can't even manage an ice day here with the temp creeping just above freezing. Beautiful day though to compensate for a really rather poor attempt at a cold spell locally!

Ps thanks for your measured input on the other side and keeping some of the  numpties in check you always have a balanced take on the models.

Temp -1c, dp -4c. Probs squeeze another unofficial ice day on my station. It just snuck a fraction above zero yesterday to mess up what could have been a 4 day run. Exceptional for here.

I enquired through my local councillors a while back about whether the council could look at travel distance as a factor when employing teachers at individual schools, more from an emissions, work balance angle but also resilience in poor weather. The answer that came back was that they couldn't as they felt it would contravene employment law (no more detail given). Wouldn't even consider actively asking if teachers wanted to volunteer to 'swap'. There just no lateral thinking in the UK at all.

We had a late start this morning by at my school, which helped as I dropped my son at his school for a Prelim. His school minibus didn't attempt to get up past our house, road was white but not that bad. He's now walking home rather than hang about, but that's his choice. I suspect with the MetO forecast for tonight that there will still be lots of school closures around Aberdeenshire tomorrow.

Also in my schooldays only having just shut school at bottom of the road    road gritting lorries would be round before 6.00am prioritising school bus routes Now it can 8.00am onwards

Absolutely gorgeous day, and a ice one as its still -2.1c outside.

No snow overnight but snow around teatime yesterday added about 1.5cm.

Clear blue skies bar a few dying showers away over to the east and dead calm...

The uninterrupted sunshine and westerly winds have fairly softened up the packed snow and ice. The central heating was last on at 0700 yet the inside temperature is 18.5c. With the onset of darkness and lower temperatures, the roads might be tricky later on.

Further heavier snowshowers with gusty winds, snow depths now threatening top of my wellies in several places. Stevenson screen in lower field recorded minus 11.8C last night which is lowest of the winter here. At the house currently -2.5 with a wind chill of -5, the air is so clear between the showers you can see wisps of blowing snow off the summit of Ben Assynt.

Showers to the north have arrived with another inch added in the last hour

 What a fabulous winter week  and I am sure it won't be the last snow of winter/early spring I am beginning to think Honga Tonga Volcano has a lot to answer for with the exceptional humidity and wet of last autumn/ early winter and the really good ice growth in the Arctic even on the Danish and Swedish coasts as alluded to by MIA on here.

Looking to the north seems to be a lot of snow heading in our direction for this evening.

A max of -6.0°C today in Dalwhinnie, already down to -10°C. Can’t see it being as cold tonight with showers moving down from the north. 

Peronally I’d rather have some snow showers than extreme low temps. 
 

[A Winter's Tale]

A lovely winter’s day with Glasgow airport recording a high of 2C after a low of -9C. I suspect if yesterday had delivered in terms of snow sub -10C would have been possible. Yesterday’s snow flattered to deceive after a big build up (a little like this cold spell sine might say) but it wasn’t that surprising as it appeared the precipitation would likely miss the central belt to the south (and if it had stayed further north it probably would have been a snow-rain event anyway). What was more surprising was how the Met office and BBC expected more snow than was likely to happen. It’s fair to say the Met Office hasn’t had the best of winters: underestimating falls of snow and a storm in December and overestimating snow on Tuesday. So far this cold spell reminds me a lot of late January 2019 which saw similar temperatures here and snow cover was no better than a dusting with one snow fall not producing as much as hoped. Hopefully February turns out differently than 2019!

Looking at the weather stations across Scotland it appears pretty much all of Scotland had maxima below 3C. Around 20 stations failed to get above freezing (mainly in the highlands) and Dalwhinnie has struggled to get above -6C so far after an overnight low of -14C.

coming down to the nowcasting again! amazing to see the "blobs" coming in from the North but being headed off at the pass to go East.. not often the City gets snow from this direction when no-one else in the shire does : D Enjoy!

Amazing pics in this thread. Shall get up a munro on Monday and find the snow.

Covered a lot of ground in the last 24 hours. The snow starts on the M74 at Crawford (and then plenty heading South). Nothing north of there (weirdly). 
 

Nothing down the A77 but Northern Ireland was looking very white over the water past Ailsa Craig.

Despite 3 inches falling in Wigtownshire yesterday nothing survived the day as rain moved in.

Back in Dumfries the snow has just about clung on after afternoon rain yesterday. I turned onto the farm track at my parents and my wheels just spun. A brief high of 0.9c, already -3c.

The weekend weather looks a delight.

you've stolen (nearly) all of it!   Just started here now bit just a few flakes in the breeze.  Nice to look at though and let's see what happens tonight!  Forecasts sound promising, and the radar looks busy!

Stopped on the A90 North of Ellon for a break, been some day. Getting to a remote farmhouse in Gamrie in an automatic Transit on summer tyres is taxing.. ended up in a ditch after someone drove straight at me, downhill in a 4x4 Toyota whilst I was making progress uphill.. I reversed quickly to get away from him and drpped 2 wheels off the side of the  road. Still deep wet mud, surprisingly. Many thanks to the folks who helped me out with a tow. Does no one give way to cars coming uphill anymore? A fair few swear words came out
