Winter Approaches..

With the first signs of a cold snap on the forecasting models today, and the first sign of a frenzy building in the model discussion thread, it's clear to see that Winter is most definitely not far off!! To mark this fact, a number of new features will be going live on Netweather over the next couple of weeks. Firstly the Christmas forecast will be making it's comeback for 2010 this week, and that in turn will bring the full return of the Winter area for another year. At the same time Netweat

F1 And Team Orders

We're getting close, not only to the end of the season, but also to the review of the rules concerning team orders. Here are some thoughts of mine on the issue. I think that the main problem- certainly the one that gets up many fans' backsides- isn't so much team orders, but rather team favouritism, in particular requiring one driver to defer to another while the "number two driver" still has a significant mathematical chance of winning the Drivers' Championship. In seasons where one team r

Winter Updates

The build up to winter continues here at Netweather with a number of new items on the way over the next couple of weeks. Firstly this week the winter area goes fully live, including the Christmas forecast and the return of (a revamped) Santa Shaker! We also have massive upgrade to our SkiCentre on the way with weather, resort info, webcams, snow reports and a fair bit more for virtually every mountain across the world. The full, technical version of the Winter forecast will also be online

"at Least It Willl..." - Slap!

Well, after plenty of heated discussions on the TV forecasts, notably recent trends at the Beeb, it's become clear to me what the main problem is: forecasters being encouraged to make people "feel good" by "emphasising positives", and to do that, naturally, they have to second-guess what the majority of the population consider to be good and bad weather. The easiest (though certainly not the best) source of such guesses is the general media, so my feelings that the BBC might be trying to "e

When The Promise Of Winter Comes

It is funny, even with all the computer models in the world, satillites and other advanced technology that we have at our fingertips. I always seem to know instinctively when the weather is going to change. Maybe its the way the geese fly in a rather unsettled pattern as if disturbed by the colder weather. Perhaps it was the extreme of warm weather just one week ago, where temps soared to 23C with unbroken sunshine. Perhaps it was even the slight niggly ache I get in my wrists and ankle joints.

Winter Forecast...

We've had some many people enquiring this week about the upcoming Winter and wondering when the Winter forecast is going to be released, it's clear that after last year there is an incredible amount of interest in whether this Winter will be cold again... The full Winter forecast will be made online very shortly now, and as last year it's been written by Stewart Rampling and the full, detailed version of it will be freely available for everyone to read. (These seasonal forecasts are generall

First "proper" Week At Uni

After the fun of freshers week, it was time to knuckle down and start what I came to uni for. My first term of my first term involves 4 compulsory modules and an extra optional one. I have 2 Meteorology modules (Introduction to Meteorology and Weather & Climate fundamentals) as well as 2 Maths modules (Calculus and Vectors & Matrices). My optional module is Physics of the Natural World. Thankfully so far the Maths and Physics have been A Level difficulty, but I'm sure that will change ve

Snow Next Week?!

I think even sleet is unlikely to occur in Norwich next week, because of the long airmass track over the North Sea- Norwich often seems to struggle to get much snow from northerlies early in the season (22-23 November 2008 was a notable exception, but that one really caught East Anglia full in the face, and it was still very marginal). But could it possibly snow in Cleadon in Tyne and Wear? That really would be a "first" because the north-east coast is particularly prone to being warmed by t

Cat Update: They Gutted Him Like A Fish! (Or How My Snoring Nearly Killed My Cat)

On our way back from holiday in the south of France I got a phone call from my neighbour, she had kindly agreed to look after our cat whilst we joined the rich and famous in St Tropez. Her first words to be in that phone call were "Don't panic" Now anyone who knows me, knows that I'm not one to panic, and anyone who knows my cat, knows that to receive a phone call regarding aformentioned feline with the words "don't panic" at the front of it is hardly surprising. Preparing For Winter!

Lots of work going on behind the scenes here at Netweather HQ at the moment to prepare for the Winter season. Obviously with Winter comes additional traffic to the site, so we're adding another server to the cluster currently (taking us up to 6 servers now), and because of the changes we made to our setup earlier in the Summer we'll be able to add further servers to cope with demand at relatively short notice throughout. We've also got a packed out development schedule with new additions a

I Don't Actually See En-Masse Illegal Activity As Ideal

Some people, after seeing my contribution to threads relating to copyright, might be under the impression that I think people should be allowed to perpetuate illegal activities. In reality, I don't ever take that stance on legal issues, on the contrary I think "lawlessness" tends to be unregulated and potentially dangerous. What I do take issue with, though, is over-restrictive rules, and hence I tend to take the stance that they should ideally be relaxed, and that in the meantime I don't

The Gust Front Up Close

All information and photographs have been done by myself and a lot of time has been spent doing this so please enjoy reading. You might have heard the term gust front, but exactly what is it and how do you know if one is coming your way. A gust front is an outflow boundary that forms from a heavy, convective shower or thunderstorm. This gust front separates warmer, calmer conditions ahead of this front to gusty, colder condi

Hot September Weather In Las Vegas

If someone were to ask when is a great time to visit Las Vegas, I would answer late September, since the average daily high drops from around 37C to about 32C and the normal low drops from 23C to 18C. For me, the difference between 37 and 32 is significant, when the temperatures are above 35 I don't want to be out in the afternoon and rush to get things done in the morning, but when the temperature stays in the low 30s I will spread my activities out. Anyways, those are the norms. This year

Sunny Day Today, But A Definate Chill In The Air

Lovely day here in Yatton, hopefully I can get the grass cut today. My garden is so wet at the moment compared to the middle of July where it was like a road! Just shows how our summer was a game of two halfs! I can really feel a little chill in the air now, the sun feels warm but in the shade you can tell the autum is on the way! Im just wondering when the first frost will come. According to some sources the first snow for the UK will be the end of September.....but down to low levels? I doubt

Lincolnshire Notes

I thought that this blog could take something along the lines of weather lore; it came about from me finding the little ditty below. Looking a little further it seems the there are hundreds, if not more of these as well as poetry all relating to the weather. I suppose we have all been told these, I know I was when I was younger (a long time ago now), my grandmother always had a saying for whatever occasion, not least the weather, I just wish that I could remember them all now. However, I’

Winter 2010/11

I am now really wondering what could be in store for us in the UK this winter. After last winter there seems to be a lot of excitment around the weather forums suggesting we are in for the same again! Can the country cope this time? Well we can only wait and see I suppose, but what I would love to know is whether the current conditions around the world, the long range models and telecommunications are giving the same output as this time last year...?? I think last winters cold was a suppri

Gulf Stream Stopped?

Ive heard this before and again its popped up in the news and media. This time it is being linked to the oil spill in the Gulf. Well what can I say but, what a load of rubbish. I have been tralling the internet to find some information regarding this and from what I have found It has not stopped. People are talking about western Europe heading for an early ice age! I love the cold and snow, but no ice age please! Weather Station Reviews

Nice Start To September

Seems like we have some late summer weather in eary September. Ideal for getting all those jobs done outside reading for the onslaught of rain and high winds! The only thing that anoys me about the this time of year is the amount of leaves I have keep constantly clearing up from around my property! Anyway lovely day here just south of Bristol looking forward to a fine and warmish weekend. There seems to be a lot talk around on the net regarding this up and coming winter. Here Goes On My First Weather Blog Here @ Netweather.tv

Its the first day of September and a good day to start my weather blog leading up to and through the winter which Im really looking forward too. Anything like last years cold around Christmas and early January would be fantastic (not good for heat bills though). I had a good dumping of snow in early Jan and to see that again would make my winter once more. But I dont just love the cold, another hot weekend in early September would also bring a smile to my face!
