Winter 2011/12 - My Initial Thought's And What I Expect

I'm sticking with my guns about a "poor winters preceeded by a stormy autumn" something a kin to 2007. I think that we are going to struggle to see a proper Greenland High block this time around and all becuase La Nina might rear her ugly head for a second time. I'll remind people again about last winter how La Nina prior to January 2011 struggled to get a grip on atmospheric conditions and global weather patterns and when she finally did, we saw weak attempts at northern blocking resulting

The Decent To Autumn & Winter Begins!

Well the decent to Autumn and Winter is under way, and although we are still well into Summer at the minute. It sure doesn't feel like it. Although this week is likely to be the sunniest week of the month, it should also be around average, perhaps slightly above in parts towards the end of the week especially. I'm being bias to England here, but Scotland should also be seeing the sun regular with Northern Ireland also joining in on Summer. I wouldn't be getting too used to it though, because th

The Accidental Gardener.

Its feeling like the end of summer here.It has been a mixed year, cold wet start, then warm and wet and warm and dry and now cool and wet. The garden has also had the same mixed results, have had to pull the tatties early because of blight, the carrots are wonky..lol.. but really tastey and I have garden peas coming out from every crevasse. The tomatoes Im now bringing indoors from the greenhouse to ripen, It is the first year for the garden, it was basically a mud hole after the diggers had

Rain Watch - 6th August

As has been forecast for the last few days, we're seeing some really heavy rain moving up through Northern England and into Scotland today, already there are reports of flooding according to the BBC: http://bbc.in/p1HDy3 And you can see why - this is the 12 hour accumulated rainfall taken from the radar: And this is the position of the rainfall as I type this update: The

What Have We Been Up To?

It's been a little while since the last update on our blog (must do better!), so I thought now would be a good time to give an update on what we've been up to behind the scenes, and some info on what we've got planned as we close out the summer and move toward autumn and winter. The main thing we've been working on is a move to new servers, which barring a few bits and pieces is now complete. You may remember we also moved to new servers last year but unfortunately it

Tall Ships Race - Watch The Website

As you may or may not know my weather website has a live streaming webcam at: Gulberwick Weather Webcam It has been angled so that it has a good view of the approach to the south entrance to Lerwick Harbour. The Tall Ships Races are visiting here this week and the ships should start arriving any time now. Also on Sunday there will be a "Parade of Sail" and the ships will muster right where my cam is looking so should be a good sight!

We Did It!

Well, as you will probably be aware by now, the campaign to save Shetland Coastguard from closure was a success! A victory for a small local community who made the Govt & the MCA change its mind. They made the fatal mistake of thinking we were just a bunch of woolly islanders who would roll over and play dead! Shetlanders are made of stronger stuff than that! Whilst we are delighted, we are also very aware that many of our colleagues have not had such good news today and our thoughts are

About To Learn Our Fate

This week we will hear what the Govt plans to do with HM Coastguard. We're given to understand the announcement will come on Wednesday in a statement to the House from Transport Secretary Philip Hammond. The Sunday papers have been full of speculation but they all seem to have this figure of 11 stations surviving, all 24 hrs operation. The one question mark I would put over that is that generally, as far as the MCA/Govt is concerned, they usually leave London ( a small station on the Thames)

My Summer

ok i hope ive sussed this thing out! not much good at technical things... well, i thought id write down on why i like heat in summer, saves explaining it on the model thread! ideally i wouldnt like wall to wall heat, but a perfect summer to me would be several hot spells followed by a thundery breakdown. why do i like sunshine and heat? well, i like to use my garden, especially in may-aug. my hobby is metal detecting which commences after a summer break in august (harvest), so ive planted u

A Damning Indictment - Transport Select Committee Report

Well, I have to say I am stunned. Whilst we expected the TSC to be critical of the proposals for HM Coastguard I don't think any of us expected such a complete demolition job! The report can be found here: My link This is a complete vindication of the stance I and my colleagues have taken against these proposals and a complete trashing of the proposals in their entirity. I don't think I have ever r

Awaiting Our Fate.....

Well, some time before the Parliamentary recess on 19th July, we will find out if our campaign to save the Coastguard Station in Shetland has been successful. The first step towards that is the release of the report by the House of Commons Transport Select Committee at 00.01 on Thursday 23rd June. Having given formal evidence before the Committee I will receive my embargoed copy at 09.30 on Weds 22nd. I'm hoping this report will be highly critical of the proposals as I believe this may well impa

Monogamy Revisited

Some may have wondered what on Earth I was blithering on about in the monogamy thread and some other related ones. I don't have a problem with the demand for sexual monogamy (except when it's thrust upon people who consent to having "open" relationships). My opinion on polygamous/polymorous relationships has changed a fair bit since posting in the "Monogamy" thread, as there is strong evidence that they are eminently workable in cultures that don't frown upon them. However, at the sa

Sustainability- A Brief Final Summary

The other two posts are a bit in-depth, so here is an overall summary of my views- extending to sustainability generally and not just sustainable transport. In short, I am 100% behind the concept of sustainability, but the key is that in order to be sustainable, we have to make some sacrifices and determine what is "necessary" and what isn't- and this is wherein my main objection to conventional "sustainability" policies lies. I think of "unnecessary waste" as primarily practices that we c
