Between Winchester and Southampton. Missed those cells that kicked off here and moved west. Now hoping the Channel fires up or I have had a very harsh bust.

I was close to that, almost on top of me according to radar but nothing much to report. Much elevated rumbling as it skirted to the south and some nice clouds but that's all. Not worth it so far but still hopeful that the 'primary' trough is going to deliver, definitely looks like there's potential imho. Getting some burger and chips in to escape the boy racers at the lookout point I was at!

Nothing in comparison to yesterday, but some towering clouds certainly looking like they could produce some heavy, perhaps thundery showers as they move East of here. Some showers also moving towards my location from the W/NW

Watched these come in from Painswick Beacon. I was hoping there might be some thunder but seems that today all the convection was too shallow. Some of the showers on radar really look like storms! Some pics here never the less, all taken looking NW over Gloucester at about 3 - 4pm.

Really gutted not to have been able to chase yesterday, was right on the edge of the action at a beer & cider festival (not the worst thing to be stuck at!) but feel like I missed out. Loved the pics posted by others though, good efforts all!

  3. Good to hear about all you peeps getting storms :D Im not jealous at all! Circumstances have been preventing me taking a drive unfortunately so its been armchair chasing for me. This thread has been fun to keep up with though. Shame theres not more pics but then theres rarely much to see with plume storms (unless you get the leading edge of the motherlode!)

Just wondering if anyone can explain why so few sferics are being picked up on our shores atm? Some pretty intense echos there, esp N & NW of London but very little lightning being detected? Lots of IC perhaps, or just maybe our electrical activity is lost to the detectors being as they are getting swamped by the BeNeLux supercellular groundhog day.

  4. Had a mini chase this afternoon!:) i could see cells building towards swindon about the time i was finishing work (circa 3pm) so decided to head that way see what happened. First stop was a bit of a letdown as it produced one flash near cirencester before looking like dying. but north looked a bit better and the a429 ran close parrall to the line so I headed along that and got a treat. Swear i was only driving for 15 mins but the scene totally changed to 'proper storm' with the sun shining onto an almost black core with ragged low base, occasionally lit by bright lightning which deigned to flicker with returns. Only saw about ten discharges as it rapidly collapsed but the best I've seen in while. Radar up to around 16:30 shows the merger of cells into a storm. This makes 4 storms for me this year, all chased down. Home town has barely had anything more than moderate rain! Couple pics from about 16:30 ish. Only phone cam sadly as was very improptu. Seriously tempted to go develop  a case of thunderchasyitis tomorrow seeing the forecasts...

The Quantock cell was a beast :D

Very frequent flashes of lightning, constant thunder and some nice structure. Only saw 2 cg's but they were powerful.

Awesome day, so glad I stayed another day

I was a bit late for the Ilminster cell, only heard its last few rumbles, but got onto the Quantock cell too :) I was ahead of it for a bit as it was forming just SE of Taunton and got the few snaps below. I followed it to the Quantocks by which time it was overtaking me as it merged with the other cell on the coast. I parked up in the back edge of the storm and watched, lots of ic flashes tho I didnt see any bolts but I reckon I saw the same 2 cgs! The second one was a big surprise as nearly all the rumbling from ic strikes had disappeared away and I was about to move when it hit, the thunder was incredible! When I did move the lanes were blocked in two places, one of which is in the pic below. Wasnt trying that in a ford Ka! There was still a route out tho thankfully. So glad I made the drive today.

The pics are chronological, the first three at 19:02, 19:18 and 19:23 respectively, tho I moved position between 1&2 ofc.
