  1. Was just browsing vids of the storms on the continent yesterday and today, btw hail in germany from a supercell today:

and just had a bright blue flash and shotgun thunder here! Teaser of a bolt out of the blue, hung out the window for 15 mins waiting for another and nothing. We've actually done pretty well out of the recent thundery spell though so Im happy Posted Image

  2. Something developing towards North Lincolnshire but its moving the opposite way from me.

Can hear lots of sferics on AM radio but nothing on lightning detector close enough to produce such loud sferics.

I guess u have the radar with you, something showing over Northampton now which looks like it might head for S Lincolshire, god luck!

Also kudos to all the people who said 1500 onwards was the time, right on cue!

  3. Just been out to look at that storm as it passed by here, worst was out to the West between myself and Gottalovethisweather, as the sferic map shows thats pretty much where the sferic activity passed through. Looked extremely dark and there was a bit of a green tint on the approach, saw maybe 4 or 5 flashes, I think it stayed intracloud, and heard a few rumbles too. Brief squally heavy rain that started very suddenly, actually heard it coming and dived for the cover of the car but nothing much else happened. Tried heading up the M4 to maybe head up on the M40 and catch up again but its moving fast and the traffic post downpour is not!

    Was good fun tho :)

A couple of fairly lively TS developing across the southern half of Gloucestershire now between Dursley in the west and Lechlade in the east. Radar signatures suggest the cells are well being well ventillated with streams of lighter precip blowing away rapidly NEwards from two intense hail cores where lightning is rather frequent at the moment.

Cells are developing in an area of reasonably strong low level shear (surface winds still backed to the SE here). If anyone is in the area, keep an eye out for large hail, wall clouds, a funnel or even a weak tornado.

  5. Seems as though you probably got your wish for storms on your doorstep, without actually heading for the channel, as the incoming event over SE England was a real lightning generator, whilst down here it was a rain maker.

Yeah except I did go to Portsdown, Doh! Got back in time to see plenty of flashes in the distance, the storm that formed a little later over Surrey zipped by with flashes to the north and south but nothing overhead. Pretty disappointing overall, shoulda stayed in Reading

  6. TBH I just go for Beachy Head if it looks likely as it is nearest to me and 530 ft above The English Channel, you can see anything coming towards us for quite a long way out.

Yeah that looks like a nice spot, nearly 100 miles away for me though. Portsdown is 64 miles so ill go there if I go tonight. Im sure I can make it the 100 miles some day though.

See this is why i love being on the Isle of Wight, because i got views all around me and im practically in the english channel xD

Quiet you! xD Dont rub it in :)

  7. Few sferics in the Channel recently.

MetO warning gone amber for parts of the SW.

Still a depressingly poor level of activity across Benelux at the moment - would have expected something to have fired by now (not suggesting for a minute it wont later)

Activity over mainland France has decreased to almost nothing now too, generally the trend accross the channel is not overly promising :/

  8. Fantastic, thanks all, great spots. Coast you've already got your own map in your head of that stretch of the South coast then :D

Im a Westcountry boy and I've not got sat nav nor a smart phone nor mobile internet any more so I really need to learn my way around if Im to have any chance of chasing.

Keep them coming, I am making a map. Any others from around the country can be added too

  9. ... where to watch them from?

With talk of albeit slight risk of imports tonight I wanted to get some advice on where the best spots for storm watching are along the south coast.

Im not working the start of this week and if theres still some potential this evening I will take a drive down, at the very least as a dry run (no pun intended!) to learn the route etc ready for when more promising setups occur.

For now Im curious about spots between Brighton and Bournemouth, they must be easy to get to from main roads and have great views. Eg im sure Ive heard Portsdown Hill mentioned before on this forum??

Feel free to add your local viewpoints to this thread, wherever you are. I find it one of the more frustrating things about UK chasing is getting to a storm and driving around trying to find somewhere to watch it from!

I will make a google map to share as a tool to aid chasers.

Many thanks and best of luck to all for tonight and the rest of the season drinks.gif
