  1. I am sure you have explained this before but could you please for my sake explain how these indices are worked out, thankyou.
  2. In my part of Manchester it was much the same story ,lack of snow but lots of cold clear weather but the Manchester Ship Canal froze which is not a small canal ,as the name implies .I had never seen that canal freeze in my 31 years, I had only seen the smaller canals and ponds etc freeze every year up until that point. It looked truly lovely ,a massive swathe of white with a city scape in the background .I wanted to paint it as I am artist but I ended up in hospital and when I got out after a few weeks there had been a general thaw in the country.
  3. Yes ,you are probably right .Considering the snowiest parts of Manchester ,I asked which were the snowiest ,low level parts of Manchester but in retrospect this question seems a little daft as I imagine most of low level Manchester has much the same in amounts of snow. The areas you spoke of ,Saddleworth etc are most definately very snowy .Saddleworth and chew valley having the highest point in Greater Manchester contributing to its snowienesss. You lucky sod. Those pictures are exceptionally beautiful though chat moss is generally nice [once you get passed the dumped washing machines ane such].The snow that fell will have most probably lasted a fair bit longer there than where I am.
  4. LIving in my part of low level Manchester I did not see much in the way of snow ,so yes ,this was a disappointment. The cold was cool, [no pun intended],but more snow would have been great. I was wondering ,where in Greater Manchester are there any frost bowls ,if any. Also does anybody know the coldest and or snowiest part,[i know they may not be the same part],of Greater Manchester on average.Thanks.
  5. very true ,Greater manchester is a large area straddleling the pennines ,as such there is a big varience in temperature and precipitation amount and type.I love cold but live in salford ,unfortunately for me .My family hale from your neck of the woodsStalybridge] though or should I say moors.
  6. it looks pretty standard to me,now im sure it will be a lot less snowcover ,thaw in north america .
  7. I agree with your point. For me ,though the cold was great ,I wanted snow like that in parts of the of the north east. I have no central heating or hot water yet I always want the coldest british weather has to offer in winter.I suppose there is the limit, the one where I would die .
  8. Not much going on here ,I am curioius about the the atmosphere above the arctic in relation to potential cold spells further south in western europe.
  9. look ,from a ignorant point of view from me are you guys saying in light of cold weather events continuing thta it i s kind of undecided
  10. i dont think i would say that this cold spell went on for a staggering duration of time, pretty average amount of time ,2 weeks or so.

    ace image.funny.
  12. There is a general attitude in britain to wear inadequate clothing in winter. It is not uncommon to see girls in mini skirts in sub zero weather as we know.Odd and pretty dangerous. The winter before last a girl died on a golf course in heavy snow a fter going out dressed inadequately.People can be really dumb.
  13. I imagne that the rest of nature as a whole probably deals with extremes of weather very well.Y ou have to consider that the native species of these islands are just that native and as such have lived here and survived here for sometime. They will have survived through various slight changes in climate if they still live here.I take a very ,some may say ,harsh attitude towards the survival of animals .I believe they should be left to their own devices and we should not get involved ,if animals die as a result of cold,so be it ,if they dont ,so be it....i think we should leave them to it ...im sure most native species will be fine after all they are here so their ancestors must have survive d equally cold weather such as we are having now.You ask about major rivers freezing ,well im not sure of the river irwell near me in manchester but i do know that the man ship canal has frozen over and all the small canals [this happens every year though]
  14. you say britain was in your news ,did your news focus on the rest of europe or just britain
  15. anyone have any idea what the weather will do after the milder spell at the end of the week as high pressure pushes in from the west..i hear it shant last very long before colder weather returns.
  16. can you imagine living in eastern siberia, snow from early october till ,god knows when, may?
  17. yes, this occlusion is warming things up a tad, shouldnt last long though.
  18. I really love rime ,it is so beautiful when everything is coated ,makes for ace effects..I have seen it a fair bit in cold spells though in my area it is not as common as snow.
  19. totally agree,as billy connolly states ,'there is no bad weather, just wrong clothing',
  20. what has the snow been like in irlam this cold spell.i am in eccles and i have to say there has not been much snow ,i assume values are similar where you are.
