  1. by a metoerologicly obsessed ghost......
  2. always get excited pre winter time.........this is tempered by the reality that the most likely outcome of winter is mild, that said winters have got colder year on year for the last 3,so who knows is what i ultimately tell myself, but still end up on forums like this speculating when what i should be doing is forgetting about it
  3. daily telegraph, mail are so sensationalist...in winter there will be a HINT of a cold snap and they will be screaming an exaggerated version, they annoy me ,that said ,a dickensian winter would be great ,but i live in my warm home amd not on the streets
  4. FICTION,.................................FICTION,
  5. yeah, thats something i have noticed about low level british snow falls, rarely could they be described as a blizzard, most of the time it is pretty calm, though when described in the papers it is 'BLIZZARDS HIT BRITAIN',someone should check their dictionary
  6. it is true what you say only i think phonomena like this is more noticable in a temperate climate like ours ,we are closer to that zone between rain and snow and ,in general we have moderate falls of snow.....for example if our climate was colder and wetter the difference of a few inches in snow cover between close places would be less noticable .If you have a foot of snow on the ground ,a foot and a half is not that notable
  7. my perfect climate would be a warm summer ,plenty of sun,the odd thunder storm and bit of rain,no drought.....autumn ,not bothered ,frost wind, don't care.....winter would be cold with intermittent heavy snow ,the odd bad white out blizzard, clear, freezing fog....the whole gamut of stereotypical winter weather.spring, dont care.......flowers maybe, lambs giving birth ,that sort of thing
  8. that is pretty depressing,.........................i hate the british climate, obstinately temperate,in colour terms a dull shade of grey..................give me some extremes please, give me a mountains of snow in winter then a desert sun in summer,,i genuinely think the british climate has a profound effect on our psychology,ie it is depressing,i think it contributes to our high suicide rate in europe. The north west pacific with its similar climate has a high suicide rate also..........our wet, often cloudy, monotonous weather is bad for the brain, amogst other things
  9. yeah ,i feel much the same as you about manchesters share of snow ,up until last winter where i live in west manchester we had not had a significant[ a fall of snow 15cm or more] for around 10 years
  10. god ..i hope so,i just can not bear the thought of a dreary ,wet,mild....boring winter..................all those palms people are planting outside, you must of seen them.....well i hope they freeze and die............erm....sorry
  11. yes...city centre manchester does suffer from the warmth of being a large city...but greater manchester is hugely varied in snowfall and temperature as a fair bit of greater manchester is high up ,being on the edge of the pennines..........the pennines also have the affect of blocking snow ascociated. with northerly, north east and easterly air fows as manchester is surrounded in these 3 directions by the pennines..
  12. why are we so obsessed with winter....why,what is it,how did it begin,when.........is it partly because we naturally get so little truly cold weather,....that we don't have to live with the difficulties .living in our warm cages, juist maybe shovel some snow, now and again.....god knows i love winter or more to the point stereotypical winter weather but for me living in britain this can be bad......i mean i watch the weather like a hawk in wintertime...waiting for that fruitfull forcast ,only to dis-appointed tim and time aagain....i am highly neurotic about it....then on occasions i get my fix biut i'm never fulfilled...even last winter could have been much colder for me....................er.....sorry for that outburst
  13. manchester.....anyone know where that ranks on the list of snowiest british cities.........i would imagine somwhere in the middle
  14. NAO..........i would just like dome clarification on the definition of NAO in general, then i would like the definitions of both the positive and negative states.,-please do this without using specialised jargon but if so explain....thanks///////also do seosonal types ,ie cold or mild winters generally come in consecutive multiples.-
  15. 3 degrees celcius here in eccles manchester at16.50............does anyone have any thoughts on the severity and legnth of the coming forecast cold spell.......i and i'm sure many others would like a return to the cold we experienced earlier in the month and the second half of december
