But forecasting regional weather on a particular date isn't the same compared to forecasting increases in global temperatures over years and decades is it? That's comparing apples and oranges.

The public are supposed to be convinced, are they not? When forecasts a few days out are wrong why should they believe what 30 year predictions will be?

If atmospheric circulations don’t suddenly take out warming what causes the massive temperature swings we have seen in the past the obvious one is volcanic activity but what else? Something else most drive changes in temperature other than emissions. Ocean currents and solar activity seem the obvious contenders .

Heat from below? Geothermal vents? After all we only know 5% of our ocean. It’s a distinct possibility that heat come from within from geological activity

  3. An interesting thread with some interesting answers. For me, personally, being that most forecasts are hardly what I’d call accurate, I don’t think anyone has a hope in hell of predicting our weather 29 years hence. Not a clue. Get them right 5 days out first before trying to make 30 year ones

I will upgrade 3/10 to 4/10 here for this spell.

Another dusting overnight, everything looks pretty even though you would struggle to make a snowball.

Have seen snow falling on various occasions this week at least and some of it stuck.

No classic here, but great to see the footage and pictures from others that have done so well.

Thinking of moving East again for the Kent clipper storms and a better chance of winter snowfall, although selling the idea to family based  on that might be tricky lol.

I wouldn't bother, think more of the Alps or somewhere. So much nicer than any of Kent and, more or less, guaranteed snow!!

    Morning gang..

Looking forward to a warm up now otherside of weekend. As a garden centre this weather is brutal even though are plants are Hardy the cold drys out the pots as well but you can't water as it freezes.

Doesn't look like the cold spell will go out with a bang unfortunately.. Rain and mild air in by Sunday and back to normal service of a westerly based pattern from Monday..

Could be some issues out east with snow melt and rain causing a lot of water run off.. Something to watch..

GFS actually brings in some very spring like warmth in the later frames but all very FI at the moment..

We haven't had a proper battlefront situation for a good many years sadly

Sorry winter freak I have to temper this comment of deep cold. It was cold yes deep cold I would cotton the phrase. The deep cold never truly arrived in the truest of sense. We didn't have sub zero ice days we did in build up to the freak 2010 period. Nor did we have deep cold like 2009. The Feb 2009 streamer had the previous week of sub zero temps and deep deep cold from the continent.

What has surprised me like the majority on here is the longevity of snow falling

Yeah it is surprising. Better than nowt though.

Largely down to the upper warm front that developed and pushed north yesterday, it helped pep up showers/develop that broader area of snow yesterday evening, but unfortunately scuppered the chances of a decent convective easterly flow, areas further north aren't having this problem.

I wish I could properly understand all that but thank you for the explanation. Bad luck I guess

A few people commenting and asking why this hasn't been the 'special even't it could have been given the 850hPa temperatures, the above is why.

Convection is only shallow, rather than the deeper convection we saw in the 2009/2010 and even 2018 events.

I don't understand the reasons why, but had we had the deep cold in place before Darcy, surely the heavy rain we got preceding the event should have meant heavy consistent snowfall?

It's crap here, too, though maybe a couple of inches has accumulated -- its not present on some surfaces (paths). So its shitey -- not enough to cause a snow day, but just enough to be bloody dangerous to travel in. I'd rather it either snowed properly, or not at all.

Yeah same. So wanted a day off work with the kids. I got a bit aggy yesterday about it but felt so let down by the weather. It’s hard to describe but, for me, snowing is about as close as I can get to recreating being a kid and that feeling of anticipation around Christmas. My wife laughed but it’s true. It’s so frustrating because prior to the snow we had 12 hours of persistent, heavy rain. We finally get it cold enough for snow but the precipitation seemed to fade out pretty quick in my opinion. Yeah some spots did well and I’m super jealous but god it was like pulling teeth yesterday here with it. Dire really
