  1. Lots of beefy, thundery showers here today. Must have had at least an inch of rain.
  2. Crazy. 25C and sunny here at noon. Might reach 30C tomorrow. Snow feels like a distant memory right now! It's been a warm and thundery May here so far, in contrast to the last three (which could have easily passed for crappy Octobers).
  3. After a cold April it's turned quite warm and thundery here. Some nice bubbly convective cloudscapes about today.
  4. Not bad at all for April. It certainly puts this year's feeble February to shame.
  5. Anyway, the weather has flipped here too. Gone from 20C and cloudless skies to 6C and cloud today, with snow expected tomorrow. March was looking to be exceptionally dry (3mm up to the 30th) before 10-15mm on the last day ruined it (we obviously needed the rain but couldn't it have waited one more day?). Regardless, there's still a large rainfall deficit so far this year, with all three months failing to reach 20mm. This has been matched by an abundance of sunshine (March logged an impressive 235 hours; January and February both easily exceeded 100).
  6. We're certainly overdue a good May here. The last three have all been cold and wet (2019 was particularly dreadful). I daren't think about a fourth such May on the bounce.
  7. March 2018 was nowhere near the coldest on record, despite the exceptionally cold start.
  8. Surely the most remarkable cold spell ever recorded in March. Zwanenburg (near Amsterdam) recorded a maximum of -9.4C on the 13th. The month as a whole had a mean of -2.3C. https://www.meteolink.nl/weerhistorie-2/historische-winters/winter-1845/
  9. Had some snow flurries today, which I wasn't expecting. Five nights out of five have been below zero so far in March - the same as the whole of February.
  10. From a wintry perspective, the first half of winter was okay - some mild spells but also cold periods with decent snowfalls. February however has been a horror show, probably one of the warmest on record: lowest maximum has been 4.0C and only two days out of 25 have failed to surpass 5.0C. Five frosts out of 25 is also pathetic. I'm just surprised there was a light overnight snowfall early in the month (melted quickly the next morning of course). At least it's been largely dry and sunny.
  11. That must have been the same stuff that hit me this afternoon. I left home in the sunshine for a stroll in the forest when I suddenly got caught out in horizontal snow. Didn't see it coming at all! 20220120_150419.mp4
  12. Nevada literally means "snow-covered"! There's a lot of cold high desert in the western United States.
  13. You can thank me for that. Every time I'm back here over Christmas the weather is always dismal, even when the winter as a whole has had its good moments. Quarantine doesn't seem so bad at the moment!
  14. A weather icon for many different generations. We've been lucky to have your services for many years on Netweather. All the best Michael.
  15. How about "prosím si pivo" (a beer, please) for starters? jules216 was the resident Slovak on here but he was recently scared away from the forum, sadly.
  16. I used to live in Žilina! The scenery up that way is something else. It's definitely colder than Bratislava too. I'm flying to the UK today. It's a shame it's not looking as seasonal as it previously was, though the outlook for Bratislava is pretty boring too so I won't be missing out much.
  17. Had at least 20cm last week here in tropical Bratislava; closer to 40cm in parts of the Malé Karpaty. It mostly thawed on Tuesday but even today there are still patches left in the city centre: I think you've been unlucky. It reminds me a bit of December 2019 but in reverse; Košice had a lot of snow but there was virtually nothing here. Let's just hope the rest of this winter pans out better than that one did!
  18. I think today definitely counts as a snow day. Got 20-25cm and it's still going, although it's not as intense as earlier. This afternoon:
  19. Yeah, I've noticed words like "kalamita" and "katastrófa" get thrown around quite casually when it comes to heavy snowfalls in Slovakia, though their usage doesn't always correspond exactly with their English counterparts. Could be a memorable event this. I've just seen one article saying this could be Bratislava's biggest snowfall since 2013 (uvidíme!). Currently got about 5cm lying.
  20. Orange snow warning in effect here for pretty much all of tomorrow. 15-25cm expected plus drifting. Can't really complain!
