  1. The heat's ramping up here now. Could reach 35C this weekend.
  2. It's been a nice June here so far, temperatures consistently in the high 20s so not too hot but galaxies away from the cold, wet crud which blighted the second half of May. Almost no rain either, with just one brief downpour the other day (one local weather station is still on zero rainfall). Things should heat up properly next week with temperatures into the 30s. Loving the lack of coolness and freshness!
  3. Had a good look before with my eclipse glasses. It was only a very slight occultation here though. Mexico 2024 is my next big eclipse goal.
  4. May 1989 was one of the best on record. You must be getting mixed up with another year.
  5. 12C and lashing it down at 4pm. A reminder that the average high here for this time of year is about 22-23C. I'm really at my wits' end now. I can't go for my walks in nature because everything is muddy and many routes are simply impassable. Then there's the conundrum of trying to dry clothes and keep the flat warm without proper heating (the gas for the radiators has been stopped, because it shouldn't be needed this close to summer). Such crud.
  6. Lashed it down for most yesterday and didn't get above 14C. If we're lucky we might hit the dizzy heights of 18C today. Still nothing even average on the horizon. Day 7 might creep above 20C but even that's a big if at this stage (and would still be below average). I don't recall ever seeing such unremitting cold output in the models before. It's going to be the third poor May in a row for sure.
  7. Here went from an afternoon temperature of 29C on Tuesday to 14C on Wednesday. Today has a weather warning for rain lasting all day and temperatures no higher than 13C. The latest ECM is as bad as it gets. Highest forecast maximum in the next ten days is 19C with only two other days supposed to reach 16C. Average high here for May is 22C. What a horror show.
  8. Same here. 2014 was blandsville despite being one of the warmest springs ever. I remember almost nothing about it. In fact, 2014 as a whole was a bland year.
  9. 29C this afternoon following the first proper warm night of the year (it didn't go below 16C). I'm enjoying it while I can because the forecast is dreadful. A chance of major flooding along the Danube and Morava over the next week with all the rain that's forecast.
  10. I don't, because I was only two at the time. I'm here all day...
  11. Latest ECM is a horror show from Wednesday onwards. Shades of May 2019. I hope to god it doesn't come off.
  12. I find that spring tends to yo-yo between hot and cold a lot more than autumn, which more often than not seems to me like one long gradual slump towards winter. The yo-yoing has been quite extreme this year though.
  13. Well yesterday was fairly pleasant until a strong cold front blew through in the afternoon bringing gusty winds, heavy rain and some lightning. The temperature dropped from 19C to 9C in about two hours. Fortunately there's a big warm-up coming next week (up to 28C) just in time for my birthday. Hopefully I'll get to have a few drinks outside!
  14. Try to imagine what 1740 must have felt like up to this point.
  15. Amazing really that since March 2013 there hasn't been a colder CET month.
  16. I think the warm summer that year has been overshadowed by 1976. I mentioned Spring 1975 with regard to the exceptionally mild winter which preceded it. There must have been a lot of early blooms which perished.
  17. Well May has started on a high note here (23C) but it's all downhill again tomorrow. The average daily maximum is above 20C now, but it looks like we won't reach that figure again for at least another week. The last two Mays have been poor here (particularly 2019). I really can't be doing with another one.
  18. It's going to be the coldest April here since at least 1997 and possibly further back. 1938 looks like the most recent April which is definitely unbeatable. The rest of the month is set to remain below average, with a highest temperature of 16C on the 30th (and even that's still in the unreliable term). To think that it was 25C at the very start of the month. There can't be many Aprils where the 1st has given the highest temperature. April has certainly fooled me this year!
  19. I didn't mention Saharan Africa but since you did, Cairo is bigger than London and gets hardly any rain. My point was, wet and dry are not absolutes. "Manchester is undoubtedly wet" compared to London but in UK terms? It's not so straightforward. Internationally, the whole of the UK (including London) has a reputation for being wet, most likely due to the nature of the rainfall rather than the actual amount.
  20. Dry and wet are relative terms though. Manchester is wet compared to London but dry compared to Fort William. London is wet compared to Astrakhan. And almost everywhere is wet compared to Arica. And that's without considering other factors like the number of days with rainfall and how intense it is.
  21. I love a bit of reverse psychology. It was more like two feet in some places! In others though it was starting to turn slushy, and there was almost none left on the forest canopy exposed to the sun. I had the place to myself pretty much, and the untouched snow looked so pristine. Malý Javorník weather station:
  22. Liverpool also does well in S/SEerly flows. In these instances, sea breezes tend to be offset by offshore winds. In fact, I'm pretty sure Crosby (right on the beach) has a higher all-time maximum than Ringway. The worst wind direction is NWerly: always rubbish in summer and nearly always rubbish in winter.
