  1. A decent start to winter here, nothing exceptional but good all the same. Had one major snowfall and two or three light ones already. They didn't stick around too long but it's only early December. Some pictures from last weekend in the forest:
  2. White Christmas for many of us that year, though probably not in London.
  3. I'd say autumn is more the 'great equaliser' than spring, as the transition between summer and winter tends to be slower and less erratic than vice-versa. Surprisingly, October is one of the driest months of the year at Bratislava Airport, at least according to the following map (the blue blocks represent the cumuluative totals for each month so far this year): There's increased precipitation during the warmer months (due to thunderstorm activity), before dropping off in October and increasing again in November. This could be due to an unusual number of dry Octobers in the period 1981-2010 but I really don't know. It's certainly been a dry October this year though - about 15mm, nearly all of which fell on one day (the 6th). Today is the 17th consecutive day without rain (it looks like the dry run will end on Monday night). 2021 is probably going to be quite a dry year on the whole. October's been very sunny too. We'll probably end up with 200 hours by the close of play tomorrow: Temperature-wise it's been rather chilly for most of the month, though the two warm spikes mean it won't finish too far from the average: (black line = average daily mean, red/blue shading = above/below average for 2021)
  4. Thought he'd kicked the bucket for a moment there! Thank God. I was just listening to some of his classic covers for the first time in ages (such as "Mr. Tambourine Man" and, rather appropriately, "Rocket Man"). Oldest person to go into space.
  5. Sunny but rather chilly here the past couple of days. Had the heating on for the first time this autumn last night. Today is overcast and still only 9C at midday. Feels like quite a shock coming out of summer.
  6. Sometimes but not always. A lot depends on the placement of high/low pressure systems and how broad/elongated they are. Much of the time I find that a very hot/cold month in the UK coincides with a quite hot/cold month here (and vice-versa). 6-9th September was pretty warm here (24-26C) but it was hotter the following week.
  7. Lovely day here, 24C and sunny. More of the same tomorrow before a big temperature drop on Wednesday accompanied by rain. I wonder how many warm days October can eke out before autumn takes hold for good.
  8. A very nice weekend here, up to 25C. Today it's 16C and royally lashing down. There's been an inch of rain in the last six hours alone!
  9. Now Category 3 and deepening. Could even be a 4 already. Bermuda and the Canadian Maritimes once more at risk of impact.
  10. It's been pretty chilly here the past few days. Today was wet and failed to get above 15C for the first time since May. Up to 25C again though this weekend. I've noticed the trees starting to change colour.
  11. It's been an excellent September here so far. Most days in the 25-28C range and still warm enough to wear shorts in the evening. No rain since the 1st either (which was leftovers from the crappy end to August). The mosquitoes are finally buggering off too.
  12. Nobody born after Feb. 1963 has lived through a winter like that either!
  13. Nowhere at the moment. It could impact Bermuda, or Newfoundland as an extratropical storm.
  14. Looks like it's going for another EWRC. How big can that eye get?
  15. I wouldn't call it annular yet because it still has banding. It's not far off though. That huge eye is impressive.
  16. As someone who likes having four seasons I'm pretty satisfied here. Summers in particular are excellent, regularly reaching the high 20s/low 30s but only occasionally topping 35C. It's nearly always warm enough to sit outside in shorts of an evening (the past week being a notable exception!). The only real bugbear is that winter is much more unreliable, compounded by the fact that milder months and seasons vastly outweigh the colder ones these days. I've never had a problem with air quality here either. It's actually windier here than one might think, with it being flat in three directions. It might be more of an issue in some of the valleys of northern Slovakia (like Žilina, where I lived for a time), which are surrounded by pretty high mountains. Spectacular scenery though.
  17. Significant storm surge in Laplace. Judging by the map that's got to be either the Mississippi or Lake Pontchartrain flowing through the town. (EDIT - I believe it's the latter).
  18. It's back up now but without audio. The winds have died down but it's not a complete lull. It's getting dicey on the New Orleans cam with Chris Oneal. Debris (including sheets of metal) starting to fly around.
