Accumulations of snow will be very variable, as the showers are expected to become aligned into bands, with some places seeing 2-5 cm of snow and possibly as much as 10 cm in a few places in eastern Scotland and northeast England by Monday morning. Lying snow will drift in the fresh to strong north-easterly winds.

Ice will be an additional hazard, particularly in Scotland and northeast England where there has been melting between showers during Sunday.

The public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel.

Outbreaks of snow are expected, starting over the high ground of southwest England during Sunday, and affecting southern England more widely during Monday. A low pressure system moving up from the Atlantic will come up against the influx of cold air from the north, bringing persistent sleet and snow. At the same time winds will increase, with gusts of 50-60 MPH on coasts and hills. There remains uncertainty about how far north the snow will spread, along with the extent of snow showers in the east.

As the low pressure causing the sleet and snow moves away into France, the band of snow will probably move northwards into Essex and parts of Greater London for a while, although the northward extent remains uncertain at this stage. This Alert will be updated again during Sunday morning.

A low pressure system moving up from the Atlantic will come up against the influx of cold air from the north, bringing persistent sleet and snow. At the same time winds will increase, with gusts to 50 MPH on coasts and hills. At this stage there is uncertainty about how far north precipitation will push, and also the extent to which snow will settle on the recently warmed ground. This warning will be updated again during Sunday morning.

  6. Yellow Warning of Snow for East of England :

Bedford, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk, Peterborough & Suffolk

Rain is expected to turn to sleet and snow during Saturday, more particularly on high ground, but with an increasing risk at lower levels. Around 5 cm of snow could accumulate on roads above 200 m over northern England, whilst there is also a risk of ice forming on power lines over high ground. At low levels and in the south, the main risk of snow is later on Saturday, and a lot of falling snow will melt on the ground, though some accumulations of 5 cm or more here could not be ruled out by late evening.

The sleet and snow will gradually die out from the north during the first part of Sunday, but ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces, particularly across northern England.

The public should be aware of the risk of localised disruption.

This is an update to the warning first issued on Friday.

Cold air coming south and cutting underneath a frontal zone will bring the risk of snow and ice. Temperatures will be marginal for snow at low levels, and the ground has been warmed by the recent mild spell, though any sustained intensity will allow accumulations even to low levels. Winds on high ground could gust to more than 50 MPH increasing the risk of damage where rain freezes on power lines, especially over the north Pennines.

Ice will be an additional hazard overnight as the sleet and snow clears south.

Rain is expected to turn to snow on Saturday, more particularly on high ground but with an increasing risk at lower levels. 5 cm or so could accumulate above 200 m in the Pennines, whilst ice forming on power lines in strong winds poses a threat of local power cuts. Ice on roads and pavements will also be a risk, especially in the north of the region. At low levels the main risk of snow is later in the day, and a lot of falling snow will melt on the ground, though some accumulations of a few cm here could not be ruled out.

  8. Don't mind if I do, thank you!

    a045.gif

You never mind if you do tongue.png

blum.gif I think this is where the interest is for me, how far will it get inland from early Monday onwards? I'm happy that the East coast is under threat and maybe some of the Channel coast too, but it would be nice for others in the region to enjoy it as well (if you want it that is)

NO...not really if I'm honest....not unless I'm going to get a good six inches (preferably with thunder) angel.gif

  9. Morning Peeps!

Strangely quiet in here given all the meteorological potential over the next few days.

I'm pleased to see that GFS has recovered a bit of it's standing in the weather community and I've kept an eye on it's output over the last 5 days and it's tallied pretty well with the actual weather that we've had. Now I know past performance is not an indicator for the future, but I'll go and get some charts and data from the last run to stick in here, so we can mull over what Sunday onwards might mean in our region.

    Mulled wine ?

.....I've still got that special bottle left for when I get thunder snow good.gif

Morning all - horrible day here today but as I will mostly be working I'm not too bothered !

Have a good one folks angel.gif

  10. Definitely the biggest downside for me is my heating bill. sad.png I'd be happy for people to have as much snow as they like next week and for myself to come back from my holiday just as it's all finished to be honest. smile.png

I'd be happy for people somewhere else to have as much snow as they like next week...

    ......just not in MK doh.gif

  11. Hope you all have a great 'hump day'. (Wednesday is hump day) biggrin.png as in its the middle of the week. I'm not being erm...rude. ohmy.png

Oh really...I've heard it called a few things but never that smile.png

Maybe we should organise a SE Netweather gathering, on a clear night in the next month somewhere locally, when the comet should be visible (and definitely visible with binoculars) - said only mildly in jest... smile.pngunsure.png

Not a bad idea....where were you thinking of ? Maybe someone has a telescope they would like to bring along but if it's cloudy we can just have a drink anyway !

It's bound to snow in MK on Monday....it's the day I pick up my new car, it's first time for 5 years that I won't be driving a 4x4 as well nonono.gif

  12. Yellow Warning of Fog for East of England :

    Peterborough, Cambridgeshire & Norfolk

Fog will be widespread at first this morning across parts of northeast England and the northeast Midlands and locally dense with visibility less than 100 m in places. However across low lying areas the fog should gradually thin whilst becoming progressively confined to higher ground this morning.

Cooling of the slack moist airmass overnight led to the formation of widespread fog over parts of northeast England and the northeast Midlands. However, as cloud layers move in from the south above the fog and a bit more of a breeze develops, the fog should gradually lift this morning and become confined to high ground.
