  1. No shadow today, unless you’re in Rochdale. Can’t believe how wet it is . I was thinking a few dry flakes in the wind but it hasn’t been like that at all.
  2. No shield here today, has snowed all morning, now clearing, puddles everywhere.
  3. Rochdale appears to be the epicentre of any shield so far , the highlighted area has seen barely any precipitation all day. Must be local topography and the very specific wind vector/strength, that area will change/expand through the day.
  4. I know EXACTLY what you mean. It’s so unusual isn’t it. It can’t make its mind up at all. Still, this is better than I thought.
  5. Heavier bursts of snow now in the city centre, bigger flakes. Still no settling though
  6. At face value , not a classic snow shadow in effect currently, although as Kasim has said it could well kick in later, currently wind is only 7mph from the east. Light to moderate snow in Manchester all morning so far. Note that the MetO app said completely dry so it appears UKV has overplayed the shield effect. Sadly we have puddles rather than lying snow but it is great to see moderate snow falling.
  7. brilliant. Moderate snow in Manchester City centre now, bigger flakes. Just turned in the past minute or so.
  8. Yes the moderate echoes are moving in now. Doubt we’ll get any settling though. This is actually better than I thought it’d be
  9. You could literally write a degree on this, what a strange phenomenon! There must be some really weird microclimates in Alpine areas. Yes the shield area must be fairly localised at the moment.
  10. I wonder if the yellow areas encroaching on Knutsford can make it here or whether the intensity will reduce
  11. It isn’t virga outside mine and Kevin’s window! Still generally light snow here though, verging on moderate at times
  12. Same here in the city centre. If those greens and yellow can make inroads..
  13. For now at least, moderate precipitation is making it into the shield area, this may well not last
  14. Light snow in Manchester City centre currently . Thanks for your updated thoughts @Kasim Awan , hopefully we’ll see a little bit this morning
  15. Morning all good to see reports of snow in Liverpool. 00z WRF has a dusting of snow for the snow shadow areas by tomorrow morning but none before then. Must be when the wind changes direction.
  16. Interestingly, if you look at the precipitation accumulation chart from the same model, the effect is nowhere near as pronounced. Is the lack of lying snow forecast due to lighter precipitation and UHI? Anyway - this is now over-analysis territory. We will see.
  17. I’m laughing at how ridiculous it is. Gaping! Absolutely have to laugh. They’re hardly the Himalayas are they!
  18. I’m on the train back to Manchester from London and FWIW snow has been falling (and settling) all the way from Watford to Stoke. Not loads but a good covering in places.
  19. We can get battered from convective showers from the east, but frontal events are far more fickle. 2013 was a big learning curve for me to honest, I now always temper my expectations when the wind is from an easterly quarter and we have precipitation coming in from the SW. There will be times when the shadow is less prevalent but it seems to be a fairly reliable topographic weather phenomenon, annoyingly. Comparing the MetO forecasts for Liverpool/Leeds/Sheffield to Manchester tomorrow is a right shame. Anyway I’ll stop moaning now and just wait and see. Looks good for a fair few of us.
