All we can do now is sit and wait for it to pour into the house.Sometimes life sucks!xxxx

  2. Really? It's been blowing a gale here for a couple of hours and its pouring with rain. The wind is howling and there are some really strong gust. I'm only a few miles from you but I wouldn't fancy taking a walk right now. You must be made of stronger stuff than me.

I think it must have been topography maybe as now it is starting to howl and the rain is banging the windows! Dont think I will be venturing out again now!

  3. OH has just phoned from London. The coach company he commutes with have been promising all day that they would be running as normal. They were saying that at 5pm. They have now been informed that actually they have cancelled all coaches and left nearly 3 coach loads of people stranded. I know the weather can't be helped but they could have at least not PROMISED they would be running a service so people could take precautions.

He's now having to battle his way home on the trains which are barely functioning. He wants to leave it an hour or so to let the rush die down, but I've told him to go now as it is only going to get worse and more than likely they'll top running altogether. That was the best advice to give, right?

Yes, probably the only advice to give (unless he books into a hotel for the night and travells back tomorrow), if he's going to give it a go, best to do it sooner than later.

  4. I agree with you all, this must be the worst weather type.....lets hope it all blows through as quickly as possible and the gust strengths are weaker than forecast...could do without this, especially at this time of year. Horrible to hear of loss of life already

If its not too windy where you are, make sure all garden items are tied up or put out of the winds way (if you have the space), that way you wont have to worry if things start blowing around outside which can make the wind sound more frightening/intense. And plan ahead, ie know where your candles and torches are should the power go out (which hopefully it wont!). Goodies in fridges and freezers should keep for upto 8 hours with no power as long as you keep the doors shut.

And remember, our houses over here in the UK are generally made of quite stern stuff and although these wind events are rare, chances are your house has been through a few of these over the years (or will have been built to a standard if a new home that should withstand the winds.)

    Stay safe everyone.

  5. It's has a bit of technical truth, the storm is forecast to have a central pressure of around 930mb, which is only slightly higher than the 928mb recorded back in 1881 I believe, but of course the isobars are only squeezed as tight as the st Judes storm b the looks of it, though the affected area by strong winds is much wider and a longer timeframe of which damaging gusts can occur. It's bad but no October 1987 or Burns night storm.

Agreed, it certainly is anticipated to be a deep low, for the more experience of you on here (which is probably 99% compared to me) is it now pretty much nailed on in relation to the expected track of the incoming system and the central pressure or do we think it still has the time time/ability to spring a surprise or two (all be it good or bad?)

  6. The more i am reading the more i am trying not to worry, just read a post which said its the most dangerous to come near the uk in 130 years.

As someone said before it is really being here and it being perfectly calm at the moment but knowing that just a few hours down the road, THAT may be on its way.

The thing is, there's no way to prepare really is there?

I think the post you read was probably a bit of scaremongering - yes it will be a period of sustained winds and rain...but the worst for 130 years?? Nah...can't see it TBH

If im wrong Posted Image !! (But hopefully not!)

  7. No, I meant someone said earlier in this thread that it was sky who had been told by the met office, I have no evidence whatsoever that the met office have issued 90mph warnings for heathrow because on their website, they certainly haven't.

Maybe it was a direct briefing to the airports...I dont know how it all works to be honest...maybe they will update the warnings for the rest us normal bods who dont have to organise 100s of planes landing each hour in the next few hours?
