  1. My boss at work sent back bags of salt/grit two weeks ago. I said to him on Wednesday that we will need to get some again because of the cold and snow we are going to get next week. He looked at me as if I had gone stark raving mad. "Snow he said. Really??". A lot of other people at work were equally incredulous and disbelieving. Is this due to the general under reporting of this event by the media and particularly the BBC forecasts? I mean even the Daily Express today are headlining with "four inches!" Which for them is under sensational to say the least

I don't know what the December temp record is but there is definately the potential for it to be broken surely into the middle of next week with such a long Southerly flow.

That said, that sort of set up whilst likely to occur in some form is not a definate and no doubt there be variable changes between now and then. Rainfall amounts still needs to be watched also as low pressure systems will start to become slow moving.

The trend towards mild to very mild is very much there and it will be interesting too see just how mild it will get.

Just looked up record max for December. 18.3 in Achnashellach, 2nd  Dec 1948

  3. Roy times have changed but that doesn't mean they can revert back, what you see over time is fluctuations. The planet has warmed and I reckon this has something to do with it and the oceans correspond. Back then the general public were oblivious to impending cold spells, so we were never had certain high expectations or disappointed with the outcome, this was before the internet was introduced. I think it would save my sanity, personally I believe a cold spell will go into history before this decade is out. My mum born in the 1950's mentioned how frequent the severe cold winters were as a young girl into adolescence, clothes on washing line would freeze rock hard, ground remained frozen for weeks/months. Winters were brutal and at times life threatening. Her mother & father did not have much but they done whatever they could to keep her happy. My mum had a tin bath her mother had a slip and suffered a fractured hip (ouch!) - She never had much at all but a slice of cake and she was happy, isn't that magical? nowadays its all about gadgets and so called celebrities, but having these small little home comforts - along with your nearest and dearest are the best you can ask for. :)

Yep, I agree with nearly everything you said here Daniel. Just not sure about a historical cold spell before the end of the decade? Only four more winters to go, so the odds are against us. But time will tell.  But one thing's for sure, I don't know how the BBC weather presenters would come up with new superlatives if it did happen. I mean, they overhyped the latest "cold" spell. So I don't know what words instead of "bitter" they could use, if it really was bitter.

  4. Winter never got rolling IMHO - it seems like its becoming harder to get any meaningful cold in this country. Charts do not inspire much faith, it was nice today however it is more suited for Spring, I did feel the slight heart of the sun on my trousers, knowing our luck we will get a very wet Spring to compensate a very dry February. Be careful for what you wish for. I think we could seek out one more cold spell before its too late.

You might be right. But at the end of the day the weather does what it does, independent of what we want or don't want. The winters have changed over the years for sure. I'm in my late forties so can remember the late 70s and 80s winters clearly. EVERY year had at least one big snow event in the South East without fail. With proper ice days, so the snow stuck around for a while too. Plus icicles, which you very rarely see these days. And ironically, without all the computer models, weathermen seemed so accurate with their forecast a few days ahead. Might be because we had proper Easterlies in place at the time, which probably made precipitation more easily to predict. OR I'm looking at things through rose tinted spectacles?

  5. Re. Nicks and Pauls comments above and the likelihood of a streamer setting up over eastern parts of Kent

    in the following 24/36 hours.

Imo, initially as the flow gradually veers more towards the NNE, during this evening, we may start to see

showers clipping the E.Kent coast but only likely to be of a wintry mix, with dps and uppers not that cold yet.

    http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn122.gif

As an area of -10 uppers start to move westward into the S.North Sea, late Thursday am, we are likely to

see an increase in shower activity, in that area, with these cells moving SW towards the Kent coast, in

streamer form, allied to a more definite flow from the NE, by that time.

As suggested above, with the arrival of those colder uppers in E.Kent, during the afternoon, conditions

should be less marginal, with showers falling as snow, even to lower levels, exception may still be the

    windward coast of NE Kent.

During Thursday afternoon we may well see an E.Kent/eastern part of E.Sussex streamer initiate, taking a

similar track to yesterdays showery train but as stated above, those areas could be in for a more

interesting late afternoon/evening period, with settling snow in places, rather than just a wintry mix.

    Tom.

It would be interesting Tom if there was any precipitation left. But judging by the latest BBC weather, tomorrow PM will turn out to be "fine and dry"

Roy I am sure you keep saying that and then post more than anyone. LOL

Early hours tomorrow 3am-6am is when I see the main PPN. Whether it is snow, can't be totally confident yet.

Yeah, you may be right there lol....

OK, I'll stay impartial, and just see what happens, thanks.

  6. Oh right, so have wasted my time on here the last 48hrs then ;)

BTW not meaning to sound pedantic but usually we have peoples snow charts appearing by now !!

I think everyone has wasted a of their precious time. And this is due to the ridiculous weather warnings by Met Office. Monday night after all will appear to be where the snow peaked.  Today was meant to be a day of heavy snow showers for the South East. That got put back to tonight. And now that's been put back to never never land.  I think I'll take another night off. Just not worth it

  7. John Hammond's weather forecast on BBC didn't seem as good. Most of the showers tomorrow in Central England and not a lot covering the South East. Looks like it might be a repeat of Monday night?

BBC Local Weather - most place dry overnight, but one or two showers tomorrow, which might be wintry. Laugh out bloody loud!

I think this will all end in tears tbh. Definitely a big downgrade all round compared to yesterday's forecast.
