I have some seen some forecasts in my time but the suggestion of 3 hours of heavy snow in plymouth tomorrow is frying my brain!!

This is the event for this locale this week as on current modeling (can all change) friday might not be as impressive for snow as tomorrow!

    @jessandjon @SNOW CRYSTAL

Fantastic,.  can't wait. Haven't really had time to have a look this morning so that's a nice surprise. Thought we were going to miss out and just get a few flakes. Fingers crossed ❄⛄❄⛄❄

Good morning! I looked in the “other” thread then came back out............it’s currently 0c dp -4!

Yep I've been over there too, now I'm totally confused and a bit depressed, so I think I will stick to the short range thread and this one. The views aren't so conflicting, but perhaps that's because we like the IMBY stuff now there is some hope that it could actually be IMBY this time.

Does anyone else find the new BBC Weather TV graphics bad at showing snow showers? I mean the wider snow areas are obvious by the fact that there are snowflakes superimposed on them but the showers just look like thick cloud / fog rolling in off the north sea. If it wasn't for the fact that I know snow showers are forecast and the presenter pointing to them I can see them easily being mistaken for cloud or fog.

Yes totally agree and the fact that the place names are so big you can't see what's underneath. Plymouth seems to obliterate half of Devon ??

  4. Well having just stepped outside and felt the windchill, I can't say as I'm too sorry that my daughter's rugby match has been cancelled this morning. Luckily the other team wimped out. ?❄?❄

Have to say all this will it, won't it, malarkey for the end of the week is starting to drive me crazy but if we don't get 5 foot snow drifts before winter is out, I would still mark it up as better than the last few years in my neck of the woods. Sun, frost and wind. What's not to like?

    Morning all,

Decided to get up early. only lying awake fretting about my MRI brain scan, at Queen Marys' hospital, Sidcup, N.W.Kent, at 9.30 am, today. I'm not overly concerned with my  symptoms, nor was my Neurologist, when I saw her, at the PRU (Bromley), a few weeks ago. She thinks, the episodic, neuralgic soreness, in the left hand side of my head, are due to nerve damage or scar tissue, a legacy of a brain haemorrhage/stroke, I suffered in Sept.2015. It's just the thought of being cooped up, in an MRI scanning machine, doesn't feel me with joy. find the thought, quite claustrophobic, actually. But my wife will be with me and reminds me, that I had 3 MRI scans, after my brain trauma, in 2015, at Kings College hosp., but then I was in a coma, so don't remember, anything.

Was lying awake thinking, if they ask me, if I want to listen to some music, I wonder, if they'll play me, " Sailing By", followed by a very wintry. " Shipping Forecast".

Dogger, Fisher, German Bight, Humber, Thames: East 5 or 6, Heavy, thundery snow showers, prolonged at tomes, Poor. Ah, now that would be music to my ears!! Funny, what your mind thinks of, when you're lying awake!!:)

I have wonderful memories, of sitting in our kitchen, in Bromley. in the late 60s and 70s, retuning our radio to Radio 4, to listen to the Shipping Forecast, during wintry spells.  I can remember listening to one broadcast, at 12.30, Xmas day morning, as huge snowflakes, fluttered down, past the lamppost, outside the kitchen window, as a Thames Streamer, was doing, its worst!! My Italian  mother (R.I.P), never understood why! Dad served in Italy, during the 2nd World War and married Mum, just after the end of the war and brought her over to England, in 1947. Mum still retained, her lovely, lilting, soft, southern Italian accent, until she died, in 2004. Back to the Shipping Forecast:

MUM: Toma, whya you wanna listena, to thata sh.ta, wenna we donor, even hava, shippa, 'ere in Bromley? :D

Mum, picked up some choice English swear words and could swear for Italy, sometimes. But I can assure you, that Italian swear words and phrases, are far more rustic, than English. I could but I wont,:nonono: too many children and ladies, read this thread!!

I tried to explain, my fascination, with the Shipping Forecast but to no avail!!:nonono:

Thought, my journey, from Lee to Sidcup, this morning, might have been a bit difficult, a few days ago, as some models showed the possibility of a few snow showers breaking out this early. But they probably wont start arriving, until the overnight period, for the east of our region. Although, as you can see below, light snow being reported, from a platform, in the southern N.Sea.

My younger sister, Angela, partner and young niece, live in Orpington, N.W.Kent, another prime, Thames Steamer location.

They are also snow junkies and are getting excited, about this coming weeks, wintry spell. Angela received, 10 inches, on top of her bird table, in Orpington, ( very supple, my young sis)! sorry Ange!!:D, from the Feb 2009 T/S event.

Anyway, hope you all have an enjoyable day of weather watching!!

    Regards,

    Rom.:hi:

I just wanted to say best of luck with your scan today Rom, hope all goes well for you and that you get lots of snow to help take yoit mind off things.

  6. Well I'm sat on the plane with my seat belt buckled whilst my husband hasn't even bought his ticket yet. He's having none of it. So I'm preparing for this epic event with only the support of you crazy like minded people.

I'm off to the shops tomorrow before the locusts land for the usual bread, milk, cat food, batteries etc and I've tried talking anti-freeze for the car with dear hubby but I got laughed out of the room.

Sooooo, I'm ashamed to say I know next to nothing about cars. I have bought wind screen wash and de-icer but that's it and I don't think that's gonna help in 4ft of snow .

I did buy some engine anti-freeze the other day, we have 2 cars, do we need it, do you put it in neat, do you have to drain the engine or can you just top it up? I'm sure him indoors will wake up and smell the snow soon and get his act in gear but before that I want to know if I should buy some more before the shelves are bare. I've absolutely no idea and the instructions are non existent.

Starting to get excited now :yahoo:

What do you use to cover your face? I have this one: https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/thaw-womens-down-3-in-1-jacket-p16817.aspx/ but I found it too thin.

So I brought this one - is it waterproof enough? ... https://www.mountain-equipment.co.uk/womens-skyline-parka

I have no decent footwear. Hmmm ...

I have a North Face similar to your burgundy one which is waterproof and great for wet snow/cold etc and I also have a long puffa like yours which is great for warmth but isn't waterproof what so ever and I'm not sure it's a good idea to water proof them if they're made of down.

I have a couple of fleece snoods and balaclavas from my skiing days which are great. Anything fleecy to cover your mouth and nose would be good. When it gets that cold we all look like zombies when we're wrapped up anyway.

I think a lot of the outdoor camping/hiking shops have a lot of winter boots on sale at the minute.

Hello Khodds...I've nipped over from the South East thread.  Yes I'm getting the same response from my husband who thinks its rubbish and my neighbour would refuse to believe it and would work of the premise of talking it down so it doesn't happen ?.  Well I'd personally rather be a bit aware of what could happen so I can make contingency plans.  Best...

Haa Haa I just tentatively asked my husband if the cars had antifreeze in them and if our pipes were lagged, admittedly I didn't say why, because I'd just get laughed at, but instead of an answer I got an ear bashing about how over the top I am. Hmmmmmmm........... time will tell. I'm really willing this to happen now.

Please can someone tell me what real clothes are? :( I feel so dumb lol!

Thin Layers are great and lots of them. If you've got thermals, even better, if not tights/leggings under trousers etc but a good waterproof winter jacket, gloves, scarf and hat etc, are a must oh and waterproof boots with a good grip. It all sounds a bit over the top but having been to New York recently, the biting wind could cut you in half, even our faces needed to be covered. Cold weather gear is pretty cheap online at the mo if fancy splashing out.

  10. OK, so is it safe to start getting excited yet? I've been feeling pretty proud of myself, I've held off all winter, for the first time ever, so no disappointments, which is great but doesn't make up for the lack of snow. This was going to be the year that I wasn't going to get sucked in. Do I give in at this late stage? Do I risk having to wipe copious amounts of egg off my face yet again?

Well I'm thinking I will indulge just a little bit and see where it leads, BUT I WILL NOT be sharing with family and friends until some of you more knowledgeable guys go first, then I'll follow.

So under cover, I'm going to prepare for prolonged cold and snow. I will stock up on essentials, tinned food etc and keep them hidden and if not needed, I'm sure they will last until the next time we see charts like this in 10 years time. :D

So what do you reckon guys, is it safe to come out of hiding?

40 years ago this weekend was the Great Southwest Blizzard, a howling Easterly Gale, and over a foot of level snow , together with enormous drifts .   3 weeks or so before my 18th birthday, Will we see a possible repeat performance  ?:D

Yes, I'm roughly the same age as you and I remember it well. Living on Dartmoor, we had lying snow for weeks and I remember driving through tunnels of snow high up on the moor, after the snowploughs had been through and the walls of white were feet above the top of the car. An incredible sight and the most snow I've ever seen in this country. Mind you I do live in the SW so that's probably not saying much.??? I do remember feeling really sad for all the poor animals stuck on the moor though. The last 'real' snowfall in my garden that didnt look like dandruff was 8 years ago. Surely we deserve a break?

Nah..that's bull. In my 18 yrs teaching our school never closed  (unfortunately) because of snow, though admittedly we're a dry cold basin  (which is why I'm dreading this potential mini ice age). We were always open and more than happy to indulge snow games !!

In 2009/2010 my children's primary wouldn't let them outside the building.  ??

    Today and tonight

A cold frosty start to the day and throughout England and Wales it will remain cold, dry and quite sunny  through the day, the exceptions being the south east where wintry showers may persist as a dieing front lingers and the south west of Wales and Cornwall where the Pembroke Dangler may persist for a while. But cloud and rain, snow on the high ground, will encroach N. Ireland and western Scotland during the morning but as this  moves slowly south east the front will weaken against the ridge leaving most of England and Wales dry.

    gfs_t2min_c_uk2_3.thumb.png.5eab6f00a494acf5f723c75a11796582.pngoverview_012.jpg?2018020700PPVE89.thumb.gif.cd55c89067965563247d35509a27c4d3.gif

Thus by morning another widespread frost in most parts of England and Wales but the warmer (relatively speaking) air behind the front is already affecting N.Ireland and Scotland Where there may also be some wintry showers.

    gfs_t2min_c_uk2_6.thumb.png.4942addd968ca4287740d8b3353253ad.png

    Thursday through Friday

By 1200 Thursday the original front has fizzled out but the next system follows closely behind and by 1200 the triple point is over NW England with cloud and rain into central parts whilst N. Ireland and Scotland continue to get some blustery wintry showers,

    PPVG89.thumb.gif.1693f7894521177fa4e62e8ced53a21d.gifoverview_036.jpg?2018020700

The fronts continue to track south east through the rest of Thursday bringing patchy rain to central and southern England with the warm sector straddling  the south by midnight. Clearly to be seen on the 850mb temp anomaly chart

    overview_048.jpg?2018020700gfs_t850a_eur_8.thumb.png.c65a9377f3ea3b4a5a8069ad8e789c0e.pngPPVI89.thumb.gif.9ef3b7eb9da40cf9c477c143dde739cb.gif

The fronts eventually clear the south east by 1200 Friday leaving the UK in a strong and cold north westerly with frequent wintry showers in the north and west. But to the west in mid Atlantic a deep depression is en route for Iceland with an associated complex system of fronts north east bound for the UK with the added complication of a wave depression forming as well. The cloud and rain from the first set of fronts are approaching N. Ireland and western Scotland by 00 Saturday.

Over the next 24 hours the fronts track south east accompanied by rain and gales and the aforementioned wave has developed into an intense little depression and is 986mb over northern Scotland at same time which could well produce a fair whack of snow there

I love reading your posts in this thread Knocker, so informative, even if I don't always like where the models are heading. The MOD thread is way too intelligent for me ??? and will obviously have more focus on the longer term output. It's great to read someone's thoughts on the shorter term prospects.  Keep them coming.
