Mild again today reaching 21°C with around 10 hours sunshine.

Rain showers and drizzle AM, then sunny spells PM. Up to 17.4C, highest since 10th.

No storms or showers coming this way, but for once I am glad to say it, as it's giving the sun a chance to shine here which makes a big change.

Scores for summer: June had 7/10 for being sunny, July 1/10 as it was very dull cool and wet, August so far gets 1/10 for being very dull, very cold (average high below 17C) and wet. So the summer rating for here stands at 3/10.

Managed some sunny spells in the afternoon here today with a decent maximum temperature of 19.4C and low of 11.5C.

Buxton, Derbyshire Another rather appalling day. Low of 12.4C. A lot of cloud with some light rain/drizzle in the late morning. A few glimspses of sun early AM, but quickly becoming very dull for the rest of the afternoon. Clearing somewhat by sun-down. Maximum temperature was 17.0C at 13:02. Just 1.84 hours of sun.

It's been menacingly dull here, the lack of sunshine hasn't done anybody any good.

According the the Bablake weather website, you can expect an average of ten thunderstorm days per annum. http://bws.users.netlink.co.uk/ From that site click on "statistics" on left and find "30 year averages", it will open as an Excel file. There is no direct link to it. So, basically, hardly any thunderstorms.

Hmmm those records for last August and this August are all in my personal weather records. I've been using sunshine data from Michael Hilton's www.buxtonweather.co.uk site for years to add to my personal weather spreadsheet. When I said Augusts since 2003 were poor, I am not talking in relative terms or compared to average. Rather more, I mean all the Augusts I have experienced here except 2003 seemed not sunny, often wet and cold. Whether that's average or not it's still poor. Perhaps it's true that I find most summers poor here because in 2003 I had to relocate from Berkshire, which had far better summers. Maybe that's why I complain about the dullness and cold summers here. It wouldn't be inaccurate to say that the Peak District's summers are generally poor at all IMHO. If I could move back to the SE I would, then you wouldn't hear me complain about the non-summers here so much.

August has got to be sunnier than this. Up to 79 hours only by 28th here. Every August since 2003 has been dreadful here. British summers have gone back to the 80's for the NW.

This time, without breaking forum guidelines: I don't know why you are pointing me to that site, I use this website every day for my weather records collection, so I am well affiliated with the averages for my location. 78 hours is not normal for July here, it's actually dullest since 1965, so points out another user here.

Buxton, Derbyshire: Good: NOTHING Bad: 1) Colder than almost any other English location consistently through the year due to its elevation. 2) Receives over 50 inches of rain, a lot of it induced by the local topography 3) For the same reason as above, it is notably cloudy at any time of the year, with about 1,200 hours sunshine a year 4) Cold, icy winters.

For the North West this month is a rinse and repeat of the dreadful August 2008. Buxton is still at 77 hours bright sunshine, and approaching 100mm of rain so far this month. No improvement in the forecast either.

We in Buxton are catching up with January for rain.

A little tip: July = singular "this july is rainy" Julies = used to describe an attribute of the month, example "this Julies been rainy" or plural "the last few Julies were shyyyyyytte" But correct grmar would be "this July's been "

Well, I used to live in Berkshire, and most Julies were generally warm, so of course the rubbish I put up with up here might well bias my ratings a little bit.

I'm down grading Julie's score now to 1/10, meaning that the summer so far gets 4/10 from me. Ratings for the year so far from me: Jan: 2/10 Feb: 1/10 Mar: 3/10 Apr: 6/10 May: 4/10 Jun: 7/10 Jul: 1/10 Average: 3.4 As compared with the score for 2008: 5.3/10 And score for 2009: 3.4 So far we need to see a huge improvement to get a decent score. Last year also received a poor score, as I base scores on the amount of weather I like (thunderstorms and heat) as well as variation in weather conditions, which this year and last have seen nothing of (where I live).

Absolutely. This July has been a disgusting bloody mess of cloud, drizzle, rain and garbage here. Utter bull-oaks. Here we have STILL had under 80 hours of sun. IT'S NOT SUMMER. I am sick of it, not least since I get Seasonal Affective Disorder, and this month has been worse than ever, especially as it's supposed to be SUMMER. I'd take July 2007 again over this crap.

Dreadful wintry day here, AGAIN. Only 16.6C and thick overcast, leaden skies, now a thick steady drizzle coming down. The low was a homogenous 13.3C. Still only 77 hours of sunshine here this ugly month. Doesn't look to be any improvement either.

Well June was OK so I gave that 7/10 but July is garbage, very dull so it has 2 /10, so the overall score is 4.5.
