  1. Yes MS, went up Highlands in December but no chance climbing with hurricane force winds, waiting for things to settle myself conditions will be epic up there come Spring with more snow than ever before !

Iain (Spike) Sykes, founder of Nevis Range today claimed that Nevis Range has more snow than ever in the history of skiing at the mountain resort.

Spike said: “This is the best days skiing I have ever had in Scotland. I skied in places that we never planned to ski when building the resort as we never for a moment thought it would be possible. I skied ‘far’ far west, and the Nid Wall where there’s flat even snow. All the fences have vanished. I reckon its 60ft deep in the Goose Gully which has completely flattened the run out – it’s probably the best part of a mile wide. I’ve never seen it looking like it is today. I haven’t, I genuinely haven’t. If it keeps on like this, I will just keep on skiing, right through summer. It’s just magic.â€

Yes Mark that's just a mile or so from me ! Snow became very heavy on one point catching lot's of people out... some had meted in the sun this afternoon but still have a covering of around 3cm here, and light snow showers started around an hour ago.

    Temp 0.8c

    Dp -0.3c

    Wind Chill -2.7c, S/W 7mph.

  3. With the Atlantic starting to weaken were in a much better position for cold than we have been all Winter, as others have said.. GEM, UKMO are showing signs of a more disrupted Polar Vortex and heights pushing North, maybe we could get stuck in another type of rut for 3 months..?

GFS/ECM will hopefully bring more interest this evening. Don't forget March Tim B Posted Image

Still have snow cover here from this afternoon..

  4. NASA Mars Rover Curiosity Sees 'Evening Star' Earth

Bright 'Evening Star' Seen from Mars is Earth (Annotated)
This view of the twilight sky and Martian horizon taken by NASA's Curiosity Mars rover includes Earth as the brightest point of light in the night sky

Curiosity Mars Rover's First Image of Earth and Earth's Moon
The two bodies in this portion of an evening-sky view by NASA's Mars rover Curiosity are Earth and Earth's moon. The rover's Mast Camera (Mastcam) imaged them in the twilight sky of Curiosity's 529th Martian day, or sol (Jan. 31, 2014).

New images from NASA's Curiosity Mars rover show Earth shining brighter than any star in the Martian night sky.

The rover's view of its original home planet even includes our moon, just below Earth.

The images, taken about 80 minutes after sunset during the rover's 529th Martian day (Jan. 31, 2014) are available at http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA17936 for a broad scene of the evening sky, and at http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA17935 for a zoomed-in view of Earth and the moon.

The distance between Earth and Mars when Curiosity took the photo was about 99 million miles (160 million kilometers).

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Project is using Curiosity to assess ancient habitable environments and major changes in Martian environmental conditions. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, built the rover and manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/news/whatsnew/index.cfm?FuseAction=ShowNews&NewsID=1598

There does seem to be some kind of pattern change showing towards the ends of the runs, with High Pressure trying to push North, certainly something to keep an eye on but early days yet as far as the models are concerned. Something has got to give..

  6. The earliest footprints left by humans outside Africa have been found in estuary mud in Norfolk.

Described as 'the most important discovery on British shores', the 800,000-year-old footprints were found in Happisburgh after being exposed by sea tides.

Scientists believe the footprints are evidence of the earliest known humans in northern Europe, previously only revealed through the discovery of animal bones and stone tools.
